Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Versus Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream

When it comes to ice cream, we all have our favorite brands and flavors. When I first discovered premium ice cream I thought I had died and gone to heaven. The key is to get past the sticker shock and dip your spoon is that delicious pint of sinful joy. There are two leading brands when it comes to premium ice cream, Ben & Jerry’s and Haagen-Dazs. But is either one better than the other? YES!

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream started out simply enough. There were two guys Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield (yes Ben and Jerry are real people) who wanted to make bagels, but found out that it would be too expensive so they decided to make ice cream instead. Thank God, because the flavors Ben & Jerry’s have come up with over the years have been amazing and the names are great as well. Their #1 flavor, which just happens to be my favorite flavor, is Cherry Garcia. Cherry Garcia is a blend of cherry flavored ice cream, dark chocolate chunks, and Bing cherries. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is quite possibly the best ice cream in the world. But it’s not just about the ice cream with Ben & Jerry; they also care about the environment and helping out small farmers. Ben & Jerry’s use only all natural ingredients in their ice cream, and choose farmers that grow food in a safe manner. But what about Ben & Jerry’s biggest rival, Haagen-Dazs?

Haagen-Dazs does claim to use the best ingredients, from all over the world. They also claim to use pure ingredients. Haagen-Dazs started out in the 1920’s and in 1983, Haagen-Dazs was bought by Pillsbury. Haagen-Dazs was the first to market ice cream bars for a more adult crowd, but they’re still lacking something. They don’t have the fun and creative names, I mean Vanilla Swiss Almond isn’t something that is going to catch your eye and make you remember it. Their flavors are good, but just not as good as their biggest competitor. The best flavor I’ve ever tried from Haagen-Dazs was their Strawberry Cheesecake. It’s the perfect blend of cheesecake flavored ice cream, strawberry swirl, and graham crackers crust pieces. It’s so good. Haagen-Dazs did have a really cute contest that aired on Food Network. They had people send in their ice cream suggestions and a video of them talking about their ice cream flavors. The winner was Sticky Toffee Pudding. I have to admit I was a little let down. One of the other finalists had a flavor called Toasted Coconut Sesame Brittle and it looked really tasty. I wish I could give Haagen-Dazs a better review, but I just can’t.

So, there you have it. I’m obsessed with Ben & Jerry’s. I’ve never bought a flavor of Ben & Jerry’s that hasn’t been great. Plus Ben & Jerry’s give off such a fun image. They are able to market to kids and adults by having such fun names and crazy flavors. Also Ben & Jerry’s are cheaper than Haagen-Dazs, while still tasting better. The first time I tried Ben & Jerry’s ice cream I was on a beach in Florida and that’s what I think about when I’m having Ben & Jerry’s; all those family vacations down to the beach make for great memories in the middle of winter.
