Best Lodging and Hotel Choices in St. Joseph, MO

If business or pleasure makes St. Joseph, Missouri a destination, take heart. In this old city along the banks of the Missouri River there are many lodging options. As a native of the city that spawned the Pony Express and saw an end to Jesse James, I can recommend the best hotels and motels in all price ranges.

If money is not an object or you are a member of AAA (American Auto Association), my recommendation would be the Historic Riverfront District Holiday Inn. This is a hotel, a multi-storied building with every ammenity. The on-site restaurant is open during convenient hours and room service is available. An indoor pool and spa allows a chance to relax or play. The business center allows guests to stay in touch with the outside world. Check e-mail or use the fax machines. Hallways are wide and well-kept. Every room is very clean and has a hair dryer, ironing board, cable television, and more.
The location – downtown – is very convenient to any part of this mid-sized city because the I-229 business loop can be accessed almost from the front doors of this Holiday Inn. Within minutes, you can be in any part of the city. Tourists who want a walking tour of the historic downtown can literally walk out the from the lobby and explore the area. Views are grand from either side of the hotel – river views on the West, the old downtown with many historic buildings to the East.

Some visitors may prefer to stay near the Belt Highway and I-29 along the heavily traveled corridor. The Belt Highway is a long artery that offers access to many of the city’s newer businesses. The East Hills Mall, the city’s only enclosed mall, is at the intersection of the Belt and Frederick Boulevard. This area is also near the local medical center and four-year state college. If this area is your choice, I recommend the Ramada Inn. Although the facility is more than thirty years old, it has been rennovated and is in good shape. This hotel also offers an indoor pool and one perk that they offer that the Holiday Inn does not is a free breakfast buffet for all guests. Prices are moderate and if you’re willing to pick up a motel coupon book, available free at convenience stores, restaurants, and truck stops throughout the state, the St. Joseph Ramada Inn often has a coupon that you can use to get the best prices.

Comfort Suites is in this same vincinity and also offers an indoor pool although it is small. It is located just off Frederick Avenue on Woodbine Road. Days Inn is another option. Rooms here are standard, nothing fancy but usually clean. The Days Inn is located near the intersection of Frederick Avenue and I-29.

If you seeking budget lodging, try the Pony Express Motel just north of the intersection of Frederick Avenue and the Belt Highway. The Pony Express is an older motel and has been a local landmark for many years. The property is old but well kept and if you want a trip down nostaglia lane, this is the motel for you.

One other option is located on the Interstate 29 near St. Joseph. The Farris Truck Stop is famous. Look for the 18 wheeler up in the air on their sign. Farris Truck Stop offers food, lodging, fuel and much more. The motel is basic but budget priced.
