Best PBS Kids Tv Shows: Great Educational Programming for Kids as Well as Parents

Growing up PBS was all about Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers. I was delightfully surprised when I started watching PBS with my son a few months ago to learn there is a all new line up of what is sure to become his favorite shows. These are highly educational, entertaining, and just plain fun to watch. Here are a few of our favorites.

Cailou- Cailou is a 4 year old little boy. He is growing up and discovering the world around him. This cartoon also features a few puppets shown at the beginning of the show to help guide us into what we will be learning that day as well as transitioning into the next segment of the show.

Cailou has a delightful assortment of friends and family. This is a great show to watch as Cailou learns and discovers realistic everyday things such as fear of a new babysitter, going on a airplance ride, and making new friends. This show also shows Cailou in conflicts that kids sometimes get into such as sharing, accidently breaking a friends toy and feeling jealous. This a fun show to watch and has a catchy theme song.

Jakers, The Adventures of Piggly Winks- This is a rather humorous show that is made with computer generated imaging, It focuses on Piggley Winks a 8 year old pig who lives on a farm in Ireland and the adventures he and his 2 friends share. Piggly WInks starts the show and ends the show as a older Grandpa pig telling the stories of his adventures to the younger Grandpigs. This is a great show for Grandparents and Grandkids to watch together. It also takes me back to the days of listening to Grandpa tell stories of when he was young.

Jay Jay the Jet Plane- This is a show centered around various airplanes and wonderful characters at Tarrytown Airport. The cartoon planes have faces similar to those found on Thomas and Friends. Brenda Blue is the human in this show and is the planes mechanic and all around helper. This show covers many topics and is fun to watch and is interesting as the planes often tell their history and teaches kids about basic aviation.

It’s A Big Big World- This is my all time favorite show that is on PBS right now. It is made with the Japanese puppetry, very cutting edge. The characters live in a big tree in the rainforest and have adventures and lessons learned in every episode. This show focuses on science as well. The shows main character and guide is a Sloth named Snook, it also has a turtle, frog, monkeys and other fun animals. The end of every episode it gives the scientific name of a character and details some of their characteristics. This show has a catchy theme song as well as ending song and keeps me and my son entertained and learning.

These are just a few of the shows that are on PBS. I am sure you and your family will be happy with the selections they have and you may learn a thing or two.
