Biblical Essential Oils

There are numerous references to oils and/or the plants they’re derived from in the Bible.

The healing oils, or essential oils as they are known today, are the aromatic, volatile, distilled liquids of certain plants known and raved about for their therapeutic and healing properties. They are referenced in ancient history as well as in the Bible and are often considered man’s first known medicine. In ancient times, essential oils were also used when wrapping the body of the dead, honoring the dead with the expensive oils.

The wise men brought the baby Christ gold, frankincense and myrrh. Clinical studies and research shows that frankincense oil contains very high immune stimulating properties and is extremely beneficial. Do you think the Wise Men “knew” something!

In Exodus, God gives Moses the formula for “a holy anointing oil”.

The Holy Oil For Pouring

The Lord said to Moses, ” Take the best spices: a heavy weight of flowing myrrh, half that weight of sweet-smelling cinnamon and of sweet-smelling cane, 24and a heavy weight of cassia, the weight decided upon by the holy place, and a large jar of olive oil. 25Mix these to make a holy oil for holy use, mixed like perfume made by an able workman. It will be a holy oil for holy use.” Exodus 30:22-25 NLV

Some precious oils, such as frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, rosemary, hyssop, cassia, cinnamon and spikenard were used for anointing and healing of the sick, in Bible times.

Check out Genesis 37:25 “As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.” Genesis 37:25. Thus, the use of extracted plant oils was an established commodity thousands of years before Christ walked the Earth.

In Exodus 29:21 you see “And take some of the blood on the altar and some of the anointing oil and sprinkle it on Aaron and his garments and on his sons and their garments. Then he and his sons and their garments will be consecrated.”

In Exodus 30:20-25 you see “they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant cane. Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil.”

During the excavation of the ancient city, Gilead, they unearthed the remains of a building used for the manufacture of balsam oil. The balm is noted in Jeremiah 8:22, (“Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?”). It has been known for it’s miraculous healing of wounds. The manufacturing of this healing balm was so well guarded that archeologists found “Whoever reveals the secret of the village to the gentiles, the one whose eyes roam over the entire earth and sees what is concealed will uproot this person and his seed from the sun”-this was sated in Biblical Archaeology Review in 1996, again proving that oils were used in Biblical times.

There are MANY MANY more scriptures containing reference to such oils!

So, if essential oils are Biblical and are found in ancient times, why is it we in modern times and are just NOW beginning to understand and discover the Lords healing essential oils? It’s really hard to say, maybe because we’ve become Ã?¯Ã?¿Ã?½worldly’ and trust only in doctors and ways of the world opposed to prayer and His healing powers!!
