Brother Bear 2 DVD Review

Released in August 2006 Brother Bear Two is a direct to video movie that is designed with families in mind. Generally I don’t like the direct to video sequels, but in the case of Brother Bear Two I was pleasantly surprised. The quality of the animation, sound, music, and storyline, all were close to the quality normally reserved for theatrical releases.

Special Feature of the Brother Bear 2 DVD

The technical features of the Brother Bear 2 DVD are excellent for the modern home theater. IT offers Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, DTS 5.1 Digital Surround Sound, 1.78:1 widescreen presentation of the feature presentation, a special enhancement for 16X9 television, and an option for playing the movie in Spanish, English, or in French. These technical features make the movie experience created by this DVD extra special.

In addition to great technical features this disc also offers a bonus games and activities section. Here you can play an interactive quiz game based on the characters and situations that were in the movie. This game is called “Trample Off, Eh! With Rutt & Tuke. The purpose of this game is to help Rutt and Tuke impress the female moose.

Finally this DVD offers a special behind the scenes featurette called “Behind the Music of Brother Bear 2. This featurette stars Melissa Etheridge and the music team for Brother Bear Two. It goes over how the new songs for the film were composed and orchestrated. It is an interesting and touching look at how the beautiful music for this movie was created and implemented.

Pros of Brother Bear 2

What I really liked about this movie is that it was a quality movie, even though it was a direct to video production. The animation was beautiful and nearly as good as the animation from the original Brother Bear movie. The music was also beautiful and touching. Melissa Etheridge was the main performer and composer for all of the songs in this film. To top off the aesthetical appeal of this movie, it also had a pretty good story.

Cons of Brother Bear 2

While I think that this was a great film, it did depart slightly from the original Brother Bear story. However, even with this departure, it is still an entertaining story that makes sense in its own context. Besides this one small issue, this is a great DVD that will make a great gift for a child that loves wildlife, cartoons, or who is a fan of the original Brother Bear.
