Buyer’s Guide to Compact Kitchen Units

A compact kitchen unit is a one-piece combination of fixtures and appliances designed to conserve space while providing most or all of the functionality of a typical kitchen. Such units are especially beneficial for use where there is limited space, such as in an efficiency apartment, motel room, or waterfront cottage. Compact kitchen units can cost from hundreds to several thousand dollars, depending upon the brand name and features. Read on for model-specific details on a few different units…

AVANTI CK-30: This is one of the least expensive compact kitchen units. It is usually sold for under $850. It features a sink, two electric stove burners, a small refrigerator, and a storage area under the sink. Two slightly different versions of this model are available with different colors and countertop styles; the CK30-1 (white), and the CK-30B (black). The unit runs on 110V power, so a special high-voltage (220V) outlet is not needed. It lacks such features as an oven or freezer, but this does make it easier to install and more affordable. Similar compact kitchen units with small freezers include the Danby D2000W, ACME RES-9Y30, and Summit C30.

ACME RES-9Y48: This compact kitchen unit is somewhat larger than the RES-9Y30 and Avanti CK-30, with a slightly higher capacity refrigerator and more storage space. It also provides greater separation between the stove burners and sink. The stove segment is available in both gas and electric versions. It features a compact freezer across the top of the refrigerator as well. This model appears to be more suitable than smaller units for serving all the purposes of a kitchen, as it makes it possible to store, refrigerate, and freeze a substantial amount of food, along with providing some counter space for food preparation. The RS60MW compact kitchen is similar, but has more counter space and a microwave instead of a stovetop.

ACME ROE9Y69L: One of the larger units of this type, the ROE9Y69L compact kitchen features a refrigerator, sink, extra counter space, four electric (or gas) stove burners, conventional oven, and storage space. According to acmekitchenettes.com, a microwave oven, wall cabinets, a range hood, and other features can be optionally added. The similar ROE9Y-60 has fewer, but larger, cabinets and a different style. Compact kitchen units of this type offer the greatest capabilities and space for food storage, but are more expensive.

Overall, the best compact kitchen unit to purchase depends upon how much the building owner is willing to spend, the size of the area in which it needs to be installed, how frequently it is to be used (and how many people will use it), and the room’s plumbing, electrical outlets, and any appliances or fixtures which are already installed.
