Buying Guide to Stacked Washer/Dryer Units

The stack style washer and dryers are becoming more and more popular these days. They are great space savers and economically sound with their ability to conserve more energy per load than a regular full size washer or full size dryer. They are wonderful for single individuals, college students, the elderly and individuals who have roommates or share living spaces with others. The are great because they service smaller loads at one time, and if you are a single individual, this is exactly what you need it to do! How do you go about finding the right model for you though? I have ventured out in order to gain more insight to the ever-popular stack style duos, and have come across a wonderful unit that just about anyone could enjoy. It is nicely priced just under $950, but I was able to do a search online and found it even cheaper with other large appliance dealers.

I did my personal evaluation on the Frigidaire 27 inch gas laundry center, model GLFH1642DS. The model I checked out was a nice white color and measured out at a height of 75-1/2 inches, 27 inches wide and 29-3/4 inches deep. Be sure that you actually measure the space where you intend to install your new unit before heading out to the store. That seems like a silly reminder, but people often run out and purchase their appliance before ensuring the unit will indeed fit in the space intended! This unit boasts a capacity of 3.1 cubic feet wash basket which is made of stainless steel. There are sixteen wash cycles to choose from and four wash/rinse temperature combinations. There are detergent and fabric softener dispensers built in and will automatically dispense these soaps, bleaches and softeners for you. If you like automatic features, you will appreciate the automoatic water fill feature, which actually determines the size and type of load you have put in and will adjust the water level to accommodate that particular load. This feature conserves both energy and water.

Moving on to the dryer element of this unit, there are four auto dry cycles on this unit, with a timed dry option that you can set to up to eighty minutes. This model comes complete with the sound technological moisture sensor that can actually monitor the progress of the drying of your clothing articles. GE Profile’s Balanced dry system ensures reliable and consistent distribution of air to provide efficient drying of your items. The lint screen for this model is easy to remove and clean, which I thought was great. This model comes standard with the interior drum light and of course, an end of cycle signal for those of us who like to know when the laundry is done. A drying rack also comes with this model.

The only disappointment I really had when evaluating this wonderful unit, was that though it seems to conserve so much energy and manages to combat water waste, it does not meet the requirements to be Energy Star qualified. It is, however, one of the quietest stack model washer/dryer combinations that I have seen, and is equipped with a sound silencer plus, which is said to provide the best level of sound dampening available on such stack model duos. That in itself can be greatly appreciated. Purchase of this product comes complete with the manufacturer’s full one year warranty which covers the parts and labor should your new washer/dryer combo need repairs. Keep in mind that a purchase of large appliances such as this are sometimes eligible for certain rebates, so be sure to ask your sales associate if this applies to you, should you decide to purchase it.
