Catholic Bookstores in the Raleigh Area

Should you need a Catholic Bible for your child or a catechism for your religious class, right now, there is a limited number of brick and mortar stores in the Raleigh area to meet your needs.

If you are a dedicated last minute shopper like I am, you prefer a real place over having it shipped unseen by mail from an unknowable source. Unfortunately there are few real religious, much less Catholic, bookstores in the Raleigh area to meet your needs.

If you’re a Catholic you know that the Catholic Bible contains differences in material included in its contents from the various protestant bibles, such as the King James.

It would not do to have your child read a different translation of a verse or have the verse missing entirely from the Bible. This can be a particular concern when your child is engaged in a class preparing for something like Confirmation.

If you happen to be a shopper who likes to feel and touch or a parent who needs a book now, there are only a few selections to choose from. Have Faith, there is always a little ray of Hope.

In His Name is on Newton Road in North Raleigh just off Six Forks Road. It is located north of I440 by several miles and is almost an equal distance south of I540. The store carries larger selection of items than they display on their website.

The store is located in the Raleigh Event Shopping Center, which is located just fifty yards from Six Forks. At night it is extremely easy to see as the center is adorned with red florescent lights making it look a little off message, fortunately the store closes before the night life begins.

“In His Name” claims to have been serving Catholic shoppers for more than fifteen years. The Location is reasonably close to St. Raphael’s one of Raleigh’s larger Catholic parishes.

Raleigh’s other Catholic bookstore is “Lamb of God Catholic Store” on Creedmoor Road, also in North Raleigh. It is only a short drive of about five or ten minutes depending on traffic from one store to the other.

Located in Brennan Station near Strickland and I540 it is closer to those who go to the North West parishes like St. Francis Assisi. It may also sport a book club for those interested.

These are the two bookstores that label themselves strictly as Catholic bookstores for the world to know. Ignatius Press, a Catholic publishing company lists one nearby store as a carrier of its titles. That is, the book store carries books printed and distributed by the company.

The bookstore in question is a regular “Black Sheep” of bookstores. We are talking about McIntyre’s Fine Books in Pittsboro, NC. Robert Segedy, the manager has had at least one article written about his love of the forbidden books. This is a general bookstore though it intentionally carries a broad choice of books including many that have been banned for various reasons and by a variety of groups. Fine books like those written by Faulkner and Kurt Vonnegut; books which deal with difficult and controversial subject matter.

I suspect that Catholic authors may also have been a group who, with views very different from long time residents of the “Bible Belt”, may offend some sensibilities at times. Perhaps that is the appeal. McIntyre’s with access to Catholic books can order them from Ignatius Press, should they not actually have what you need. Located to the West of Raleigh and Durham they can provide a source of books for those Catholics who have settled in that direction.
