Huang Qi, also known as Radix Astragali, is used to relieve rheumatic condition, and to remove obstacles from the channels and relieve pain. Fu Ling, also known as Poria, is used to cause diuresis, to invigorate the spleen function, and to relax the mind. For conditions like Edema with oliguria; dizziness and palpitation caused by retained fluid; diminished function of the spleen marked by anorexia, loose stools or diarrhea; restlessness and insomnia.
� Inducing diuresis and removing dampness. In treating dysuria, edema, etc. due to retention of water, the drug is often used with Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Polyporus Umbellatus, Rhizoma Alismatis, Pericarpium Arecae, etc.
� Ivigorating the spleen and tonifying the middle warmer. In treating retention of phlegm, loose stool, etc. due to failure in moving and alteration of water as a result of deficiency of the spleen, the plant is often used with Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, etc.
� Calming the mind. In treating palpitation and insomnia due to deficiency of the heart and spleen, the herb is often used with Radix Codonopisis Pilosulae, Arillus Longan, Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, etc.; in treating palpitation and insomnia (due to internal obstruction by cloudy, thick phlegm or breakdown of the normal physiological coordination between the heart and kidney), the drug is often used with Rhizoma Acori Graminei, Radix Polygalae, etc.

Dan Shen, also known as Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, is used to remove blood stasis and relieve pain, to promote the flow of blood and stimulate menstrual discharge, and to ease the mind. Menstrual disorders, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea; mass formation in the abdomen; pricking pain in the chest and abdomen, pain in acute arthritis and subcutaneous infection; fidgets and insomnia; hepatosplenomegaly; angina pectoris.
� Promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis.
