Choose Your Color, Choose Your Mood

Whether we’re aware of it or not different colors, and combinations, can greatly effect our moods. That’s because certain colors remind us of certain things in life. For example, blue has a way of generating feelings of peace and tranquility. That’s not to say that if we paint all of our walls blue we’ll have nothing but peace in our lives. No, but the fact is, the color blue has been scientifically proven to slow the pulse, lower body temperature, and even prompt us to eat less. Consider blue for the living room, kitchen or a bedroom.

Choosing certain colors for certain rooms of your home can decide whether you will feel sad or happy. Although it seems absurd color actually has that much impact on our lives. Take black, for instance. Although in small amounts, and with certain colors like gold, black can imply sexuality, mystery and elegance. But a room with mostly black often lends to feelings of sadness, remorse, anger and even fear. If you simply love black, choose a small black item or two but don’t go with decor that makes black the dominant color.

When asked about favorite colors most people choose blue or green. Green represents, in many minds, nature, good luck, or springtime. Having some greenery in each room of the house is a nice way to make the atmosphere a little more relaxing. Choose a silk or real plant to place in every room – even the bath.

Red is a color that grabs attention. It’s considered the warmest color and often evokes feelings of passion and love. But, too much red can stir feelings of anger and violence. Red triggers feelings, on an unconscious level, of anger, violence, and injury, in some people. Go easy on the red inside your home, particularly in the living room. If you love red, consider some red touches in the bedroom, like a throw rug or a red lamp.

Choose the color white if you want a room to look clean and peaceful. White generates feelings of innocence, youth, winter purity, sterility and simplicity. A solid white room can conjure images, usually subconsciously, of hospitals, or institutions. Add flashes of color, here and there, when going with a mostly white room.

Yellow is a good color to bring about feelings of joy and happiness. Even if you don’t personally like to wear the color yellow, when others are round that color they subconsciously think of sunshine, summer, gold, and gentle breezes. Too much yellow can stir feelings of dishonesty and deceit, though.

Spirituality, royalty, mystery and wisdom are some of the emotions triggered by the color purple. Too much purple can stir feelings of arrogance, cruelty or even mourning. Choose colors of purple that are light and airy, if you’ll be painting in the kitchen or living room. For the bedroom, deeper colors of purple are okay but add flashes of red, orange or white to keep it from being too oppressive.

If your home is your respite, make sure it’s comfy and inviting. Choose colors that will not only make you feel good but will relax your guests as well. Remember that dark colors bring dark moods and light colors bring light moods.
