Choosing the Right Wax for Candle Making

It all started because I was tired of paying too much for candles. It occurred to me that most things are much cheaper to make than to buy so I decided to start looking online for candle making instructions. I found many sites that offered instructions, tips, hints and even candle making kits. The site I found that http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/candlemakingbasics/ was easiest to read and follow directions. It offers many types of candle and candle making instructions for the beginner to the advanced.

Supplies are easy to find in most arts and crafts store or you can do a search for candle wax or beeswax online and find many retailers that sell everything you need to create the perfect candle.

Beeswax seems to have the longest burn time as well as burning cleaner than paraffin or gel candles. Beeswax candles don’t leave soot behind when burning and for those that suffer from allergies or asthma this is probably the best choice in candle waxes for you.

Soy candles also have similar benefits as beeswax but soy seems to hold and give off a stronger fragrance than any other wax. Soy is quickly becoming the preferred wax of many home candle makers and also becoming popular among consumers.

Paraffin is easy to use and cheap to purchase but it does not hold scent well and it heats up faster than soy or beeswax. This is not a material I recommend because of the many drawbacks including the risk of spilling the candle and burning yourself with the very hot wax.

Gel candles are some of the most creative and translucent candles but they are also the most dangerous. The gel is made from a petroleum base and it does run the risk of catching fire beyond the wick. Spilling one of these candles on skin can cause serve burns in a very short period of time. These candles are extremely dangerous around children and pets.

You can either buy molds that vary in shapes and sizes in your craft store or use old containers from other candles. Simply clean out the jar and refill with your choice of wax. Wick, scents and colors are usually available in the same aisle.

There are many sites online that will offer instruction, ideas and almost any product you need to create the candle that is right for you and your home or candles that make the perfect gifts just take the time to find out what is right for you.

When you are done you will be pleased with the result and even happier with amount of money you will be saving on store bought candles.
