Grampa Jerry’s Clown Museum – Arriba, CO
Free admission to a museum containing a 3,000 piece clown collection of everything from pictures of clowns drawn by children to clown banks, music boxes, whiskey decanters and coffee cups. Parklike area with playground for kids.
Kit Carson County Carousel – Burlington, CO
Free admission to one of only 150 of the nearly 4,000 carousels built between 1885 and the 1930s that still survives. Burlington is proud to be home to PTC (The Philadelphia Toboggan Company ) #6. You can still get a ride today, as well as a historical tour of the carousel, on the lion and his forty-five wooden friends, as they glide counterclockwise to the waltzes and marches of 100 years ago.
Old Town – Burlington, CO
Burlington hosts two of the FREE ADMISSION museums, the second of which is the Old Town Museum, a recreation of a turn-of-the-century prairie town featuring 21 fully restored historical buildings, housed with authentic artifacts.
Cheyenne County Museum – Cheyenne Wells, CO
Free admission to the former Cheyenne Wells County jail from 1894 until the late 1950s. Today, you can see vintage clothing, old photographs, and business, farming, and ranching memorabilia, as well as reflect on what it must have been like to have been a prisoner in those days
Flagler Hospital Museum & Hal Borland Room – Flagler, CO
Now the municipal building of Flagler, this building celebrates its history as a hotel and hospital with exhibits and displays, as well as a room dedicated to noted author and columnist Hal Borland
Second Central School Museum – Flagler, CO
The second free admission museum in Flagler is the Second Central School building, built in 1915 as towns began to break away from the traditional “one-room” schoolhouses. Its authentic desks, a drinking water crock, and other artifacts salvaged from other rural schools help this museum retain its old time school building feeling. A spiral brick chimney and the reproduction of a bronze plaque presented to this “superior school” by the State of Colorado in 1917 are some of the highlights of the tour.
World’s Wonder View Tower – Genoa, CO
A promotional invention of Colorado’s own P.T. Barnum, this tower was officially confirmed in 1934 by the Geological Survey as “the highest point between Denver and New York City” and Ripley’s Believe it or Not determined that six states could be seen from the top.
Lincoln County’s Hedlund House Museum – Hugo, CO
Built in 1877, this house in Hugo, Colorado became a museum in 1972, after serving as home to three generations of the Hedlund family from 1918 until 1971.
Kit Carson Museum – Kit Carson, CO
The old Union Pacific Railroad depot in Kit Carson was rescued from demolition in 1968 and today contains a wide variety of exhibits of artifacts of the railroad era, the eastern plains, and much, much more.
Limon Heritage Museum & Railroad Park – Limon, CO
See the 1910 Limon Depot, permanent “Trains of the Plains” exhibit, Houtz Native American Collection, Railroad Park, and the Exhibit Building, which houses the “Life and Legends of the Plains” exhibit.
