Contact Lens Fashions
My Optometrist asked me if I would like to either get contact lenses or glasses or both! I opted for contact lenses because I was in college and at the age where looks meant a lot to me.
After my exam he prescribed some clear contact lenses and had his assistant show me how to put them in. It took about 15 min for me to learn how to place the lenses on my eyes but once I got them in I was amazed at how far I could see! With watery eyes from spending 15 min with my finger in my eyes, I could make out street signs, people’s faces from a long ways away, and even the television set!
The lenses I was prescribed were soft disposable lenses. That means that they were only good for two weeks worth of wear. I had a box of 3 pair of lenses to last me 6 weeks. I was also instructed to take my lenses out for sleep. Because they are disposable they are not made to withstand 24 hours of wear. They dry out easily so sleeping in them could cause dry eyes and possible infections that, in extreme cases, can lead to complete loss of vision.
It didn’t take me long to get used to having lenses in. I as hooked from that day on.
A month and a half later it was time for me to buy more lenses. I went to another Optometrist closer to my home and asked about color lenses. I have very dark brown eyes that most people say look black. I wasn’t even sure if they made lenses for dark eyes but I was surprised to learn that there was a whole line of colors made for dark eyes.
I was able to try on several different colors (green, blue, light brown, and violet). The colors were very vibrant with almost a supernatural look to them. I selected the green and placed my order for a box. I stuck with the green color lenses for a long time. When it was time to buy another box I would always order the same green.
Years went on and another type of color lenses emerged. They are called color blends and they are made to look more natural. The green for instance is made with gray and some brown to create those natural flecks of color that natural green-eyed people have. I tried those on and have stuck with the color blends type ever since.
There are so many different colors offered in color blends style. Grey, green, brown, violet, turquoise, sapphire, amethyst and others. I have tried most of them and I currently have gray.
For people with light eyes there are fewer colors but enough of a selection to enjoy them.
Contact lenses have evolved so much that you can even find a style called Wild Eyes. This type has lenses that make your eyes look like cat eyes, bloodshot, alien eyes, an 8 ball, and a bunch of others. These are fun for parties and Halloween costumes. I have personally never tried any of these because they are usually pretty expensive. For the wild person inside you it would make a fun purchase.
Recently there have been advertisements for another type of contact lens. The comfort-wearing lens. These lenses provide extra moisture to your eyes for more comfortable wearing and less chance of getting dry eyes. Another style along this same type is the breathable lenses. These lenses have a technology that causes the lenses to give you 5 times the amount of oxygen that normal lenses provide. These kinds of lenses are designed not only for maximum comfort but also to lessen the chances of infection and injury.
No matter which types and styles you choose to get your contact lenses in, there are lots of options and price ranges. For the best information it is good to communicate with your Optometrist because he/she will know which type would be the best for you.
