Create a Pet-Friendly Backyard

Pet lovers who enjoy spending time outside with their fur babies know that sometimes a backyard isn’t always pet-friendly. Any pet owner can take steps to make their back yard safe and fun for their four-legged friends. Taking the time and making the effort to do so will ensure a safe and happy playtime outdoors.

Containment

A means of containing your pet in the backyard is a must in order to keep your pet safe from hazards such as traffic. Containment also helps ensure that your pet does not cause damage to nearby properties or harass neighbors. Barrier fencing is the best means of containment. Proper training can also reassure you that your pet is safe if he gets out of the containment area. Other means of containment could be a small pet yard made from individual kennel panels.

Check for Hazards

Before letting your pet spend time in your backyard, be sure to check for potential hazards. Are there large holes that your pet could fall into or step into? Are there numerous obstructions in the yard that could harm your pet?

Check for areas of standing water that might become potential breeding ground for mosquitoes that could spread disease to your pet. To cut down on fleas and ticks, consider having your yard sprayed to kill such pests, making your yard more comfortable for your pet.

Make sure that there are no toxic plants growing in your yard where your pet could get to them. Some flowers, weeds and trees may be pretty or seem harmless, but in reality they are toxic to cats and dogs. Apple trees and apricot trees are perfect examples. According to the ASPCA, those particular trees contain cyanide in certain parts of the tree and are extremely harmful if ingested.

Other common plants like azaleas, black nightshade, black walnuts, daffodils, day lilies, elephant ears and more can be hazards for your pet. Check the ASPCA website for a complete list.

If removal of dangerous plants is not possible, block your pet from having access to the plant and any leaves, fruit or stems the plant may drop.

Create Fun

Create fun, play areas for your pet in your backyard. Whether it is a simple thing like providing toys for play time or setting up an exercise area, make your back yard fun for your furry friend. Remember that one of the most enjoyable aspect of fun for your pet is time you can spend playing with him or her. A small swimming pool, an assortment of toys or some time romping with their beloved human can make your pet’s day perfect.
