Creative Craft Ideas for CDs

How many times have you received a free CD in the mail and thought what a shame it was to throw it away? If you added up the number of CDs you’ve received since CDs were invented you’d be astounded. It is a shame to throw away the dozens of free CDs that arrive in the mail when there are a number of craft projects and ideas for using old CDs.

Instead of throwing away the free CDs that arrive in the mail, put them to good use. The following craft projects and ideas will enable you to use CDs in a number of creative ways. No one will ever guess your creative crafts ideas started with old CDs that would have otherwise ended up in the trash. Try these creative craft ideas next time you find CDs in your mailbox that you’ll never use.

CD Refrigerator Magnets

If you love refrigerator magnets, this is one of the most creative ideas for using CDs. Simply paint designs of your choice on the blank side of a CD. If you aren’t artistically inclined use stencils to create flowers, vines, geometric shapes, and anything else that will compliment the item you choose for the center.

Glue an item to the center such as a smaller refrigerator magnet, an old broach, a silk flower, or a painted plaster craft item, and complete it by attaching a strong magnet to the back. The options are only limited by your imagination.

Rainbow Suncatcher

Have you noticed how CDs capture and exhibit every color of the rainbow when tilted toward light? Old CDs make fantastic suncatchers, and if you love suncatchers, this is one of the best ideas for putting otherwise worthless CDs to good use.

To create a suncatcher you’ll need ten or twelve old CDs. Glue the labeled sides of two CDs together until you have five or six connected pairs. Super glue is perfect for this project. After the glue has dried completely, carefully drill a small hole near the edges of each pair.

Complete the suncatcher by stringing the CDs with clear thread or fishing line. Stager the lengths of clear thread so the CDs don’t touch, and tie them to a small branch several inches apart. Wrap the branch with an artificial vine, and if desired, adorn the vine with small artificial flowers of your choice. Hang the finished CD suncatcher in front of a sunny window, and enjoy a rainbow of beautiful colors created by old CDs.

Mosaic Photo Frame

Useless CDs make fantastic mosaic photo frames, and best of all, a photo of any size can be decoratively framed. To make a CD photo frame you’ll need an inexpensive mat frame in a color of your choice, thick clear drying craft glue, safety glasses, two pairs of pliers, and enough CDs to cover the dimensions of the mat.

Begin this project by putting on safety glasses and breaking old CDs into pieces of various shapes and sizes. Simply hold the CD with one pair of pliers, and snap it into pieces with another. After you have enough broken pieces to cover a mat frame of your choice, glue the broken pieces to the mat with thick clear drying craft glue. Leave about a millimeter of space between each piece so the underlying color shows through. After covering the entire mat, allow the glue to dry completely.

Once the glue has dried, attach a photo to the back of the mat. A little masking tape across the back of each corner should be sufficient. You’ll love the look of this mosaic photo frame, and no one will ever guess you designed it using worthless old CDs.
