Creative Homemade Halloween Costumes
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back this year and are as popular as ever. With just a little creative talent to paint a turtle shell, your kid can be whichever turtle he wishes. Have him don a green sweat suit, and then simply cut a piece of cardboard out big enough to cover the child’s chest/stomach area. Then, be sure to round off the edges so it resembles the bottom of a turtle’s shell. You may also want to draw a karate belt on the lower portion of the shell. Then, just snip a piece of fabric to make a headband. Remember, when doing this final step, if your kid has a favorite Ninja Turtle, choose the correct color to correspond with that character. Orange is for Michelangelo, purple for Donatello, red for Raphael and blue for Leonardo. Your kid is now ready to clean up the streets during Halloween night!
Do you want an even easier project? How about the character of Charlie Brown? This costume requires very little effort and money. If your kid has black shorts and sneakers, you’re already halfway done! The only thing to do now is obtain a solid yellow t-shirt and apply a black zigzag on the tummy portion. This can be accomplished by either sewing a cutout zigzag on the tee, or, an even simpler approach would be to use a permanent black marker to hand-draw it. Allow the tee to dry overnight as a lot of ink will need to be applied to the t-shirt if you choose the latter method.
An equally effortless costume project for a girl would be Miss America. Dig out the fanciest dress your daughter has on hand and have her wear that. Then, create a sash using an extra piece of fabric or a wide ribbon. Using a glue stick, write Miss America and then the year. To complete the sash, quickly sprinkle the writing with glitter. While allowing the sash to dry, find some fancy costume jewelry for her to wear. A tiara, some nice shoes or a pair of crisp, white gloves will make her look like the ultimate pageant contestant. Be creative with this one and your little girl will feel like a princess.
This last idea is for all ages. Parents, this would make a easy costume to wear while taking your little ones door-to-door to collect candy. It’s called the Jack-O-Lantern and it is very easy to create. Simply wear a bright orange sweat shirt that you don’t mind drawing on. Fill it with crumpled up old newspapers and draw the best jack-o-lantern face you can on the front. You will need to tie a belt or piece of ribbon on the bottom of the sweat shirt to keep the newspapers in place. You can wear orange sweat pants or black pants also look good and festive with this costume. The walking jack-o-lantern is sure to be a hit at little to no cost to you.
The best part of creating your homemade costume is that you won’t have to feel guilty for spending $40.00 on this year’s most popular costumes, just to sell them in the next spring’s yard-sale for a fraction of what you paid. Have a fun and safe Halloween!
