DIY Home Improvement: Replacing Aluminum Windows
Materials you will need to have on hand for this project are:
1. Measuring Tape
2. A Carpenter Square
3. Screwdriver
4. Caulking Gun
5. Windows
6. Level
7. Pry Bar
Steps for Installation:
*Before ordering your windows make sure that you have the right measurements. You will need to make sure that you measure all your windows and not assume that they are all the same size. Some companies will not allow you to return the windows once purchased.
*To figure out what size windows you will need, measure the width and height of your widow frames. For proper measurement of aluminum window replacements, remove the fixed panel held by screws and take the screen off. Measure from the farthest protruding flange to it’s opposite. Take measurement from top to bottom and left to right for height and width. Take your final measurements and subtract 1/4″ to 3/8″ for proper ordering measurements.
*Upon delivery of your new aluminum windows, take them out of the packaging and check for any damage. Measure your new aluminum windows to double check that you ordered and they delivered the correct windows. There’s nothing like starting a project like this and finding that you don’t have the right fit.
*Remove your old window by taking out the screws holding in the panel. Cut through any old caulking that may be holding the window once the screws are removed. Take the window out.
*Next you will need to remove the meeting rail. The meeting rail is also taken out by removing the screws holding it in place. Be sure to remove any old wood trim to make sure that your frame will be flush for the new aluminum window to be installed.
*Once the frame is prepared place your new aluminum window into the frame. Use your level to make sure that it is in the correct position and mark your corners. Remove the new aluminum window from the frame.
*Using your caulking gun, caulk the surface of the frame that you are going to place your aluminum window in. Place your new aluminum window inside the frame matching up to the marks you made. Double check with your level to insure proper placement.
*Press firmly on the window to form a tight seal. Once secure enough to stay in place, go inside and make sure that the aluminum window is level from the inside and opens and closes.
*With the aluminum window placed properly, screw the window in place by placing screws 18″ apart along the inside frame of the window.
*Outside apply caulking to the aluminum window’s edge to ensure that the window is completely sealed.
*Use wood moulding to cover any gaps you may have inside between the drywall and window frame.
