Descriptive Writing Lesson Plan Bundle

Lesson 1:
Introduce yourself. Tell me what your hobbies are, what subjects interest you the most, and what you hope to learn in creative writing. Tell me about your favorite books, authors, or favorite types of stories.

This assignment should be written in separate paragraphs, and should be no less than two pages in length.

Lesson 2:
Try to identify your earliest childhood memory. Write down everything you can remember about it. You may choose to do this from your current perspective or from the perspective you had at that age. This assignment should be written in separate paragraphs, and should be no less than two pages.

Lesson 3:
Think about a time a person did something that made a difference in your life. Write about that time. Be sure to narrate an event or series of events and include specific details in your response.

A narrator tells us about an event that they participated in or watched from afar, or when speaking about an event that happened in their past. Sometimes simple events in our lives mean a great deal to us. Include details about the person and what you gained from this experience. This should be no less than two pages.

Lesson 4:
Poetry as song. I want you to dissect a song. Pick any song of your choosing and line by line break down the ‘innards’ for me. Tell me what every line means. How does it make you feel?

Poetry is a form of writing used almost every day. We hear commercials, catch phrases and most importantly, music. All forms of poetry in our lives daily. This is probably something that you take for granted. I want you to study poetry in a different fashion.

I would like you to type the song lyrics out in bold and your responses in regular type font. Take up as much space as you need.

Lesson 5:
What do you want to be when you grow up? We all have ideas of what we’d like to do as we age. I’d like to know what you feel you want to do with your life.

Some questions to consider: How do you feel this particular industry/job will change in the next ten years? How much money would you like to make? Why this particular job? How will this affect your life, family? How long would you like to hold this title? What are your inner-most goals for this career?

This assignment should be no less than two pages long.
Lesson 6:
Recall an old argument you had with another person. Write about the argument from the point of view of the other person. Remember that the idea is to see the argument from their perspective, not your own. This is an exercise in voice, not in proving yourself right or wrong.

The first paragraph should state what the argument was about.

The second paragraph should give me the reasons behind your beliefs.

The rest of the assignments should be in the perspective opposite of you.

How did you leave this argument? Do you feel that either of you could have compromised your beliefs?

This assignment should be no less than one page.

Lesson 7:

I want you to complete this statement using about 500 words. Be serious. I’d like to know what you would want to change.
