Design Themes for Girls Rooms: A Grown Up Room
These days little girls want to feel grown-up. You make her bedroom “grown up style” without creating an actual adult bedroom. To make a room for your little girl is that sophisticated, timeless, and still just right for her, use the following tips:
Choose the right color for a grown up theme little girl’s room:
Avoid using baby-ish colors like light pink, baby yellow, or powder blue. Instead look for colors like lavender, denim blue, hot pink (for accents), and muted greens.
No Disney Themes:
Do not use wallpaper and bedding with Disney characters or the latest cartoon. A celestial theme, toile, or something natural like the beach is much more timeless.
Sophisticated Fabrics:
Look for fabrics with lots of texture. Instead of lace and solid cotton colored bedding, consider linen, denim, silks, and twin in the form of plaids stripes, checks, and toile. Pick one of these that really inspire you and create the room based on that piece of fabric.
Furniture they can use now and grow into later:
Purchase high quality furniture in classic style such as Mission, Shaker, or Arts and Crafts. Make sure they are strong and well made. If you are purchasing a crib, get one that converts into a full sized bed. If it is time for a toddler bed, do not bother with the tiny bed and giant sized rails. Instead, purchase a full sized bed and step stool for the bed.
Get grown up accessories:
Avoid juvenile accessories. Instead, decorate with “adult” items like faux pearls hung from pegs, broaches used on the window treatments, and antique tea sets on high shelves. A clothes form complete with dress up clothes will complete the look. Likewise, for occasional furniture, get full size armchairs instead of beanbags so your child can snuggle up with their favorite book or in your lap.
Get adult versions of baby items.
For a receiving blanket that does not scream baby, purchase a throw blanket instead. Have an adult comforter you love cut down to fit your child’s bed. Extra bedding can be used for window treatments and accessories.
No plastic storage allowed:
Instead of buying plastic storage container that are popular in kid’s rooms, buy adult versions instead. Purchase high quality shelving systems with wicker baskets to store items, and a beautiful but solid hope chest instead of a toy box.
