Design Themes for a Boys Bedroom

With a little planning and imagination, you can create a bedroom to suit any boy. If the boy or boys are old enough, involved them by asking what they would like to see. Older boys can help paint, build and decorate the room, with appropriate adult supervision. Their ideas may get a bit wild and that leaves plenty of room for compromises.

Astronauts and outer space bring out infinite imagination and possibilities. Paint the whole ceiling or a large circle a dark blue. Using glow in the dark stick-on stars and planets, make random patterns or reproduce a real section of the night sky. Using a small brush and bottle of glow-in-the-dark paint, place sweeps throughout the picture for comets or the Milky Way snaking its way through the galaxy. Freehand or use sponges to design an alien world on one or more walls. Decorate the room with matching bedclothes and curtains of spaceships or the solar system.

Bring the great outdoors inside to make for big adventures. Design a compass or sundial and place it on the ceiling. Be sure to place cardinal points in the correct positions, adds to the learning experience. Place trees, rocks and animals on the walls for the correct atmosphere. Cut out designs from plywood and then paint and lightly glue to the wall for added depth. Raise the bed up high enough or make room in a corner for a small pup tent for play or occasional sleeping. Bears and moose are great for forest designs. Cacti and lizards are suitable for desert scenes.

Trains and other vehicle themed rooms have plenty of options. Run a thin shelf all around the top of a room, with buildings in detail or black shadows. Lightly secure railroad track and use a battery-operated train to make tracks around the room. Using batteries will make the setup safer and lower the risk of any type of electrical failure. Placing holiday rope lights under the track will add a night light feature. For an automotive fan run roads or racetrack instead. The wide availability of NASCAR-themed items makes that theme an easy one. Construction equipment and fire trucks are other great vehicle centerpieces. Make use of toys on top of chests or on special shelves located on the wall.

All of the above suggestions as well as others acquire other accessories. Rugs in a variety of styles, shapes and colors are available to enhance the feel. Build containers out of PVC pipe and canvas to hold toys and other play stuff. Purchase pipes and joints at any home improvement store and take advantage of the staff by asking for helpful tips. Purchase canvas to compliment the room’s theme. Place plywood cutouts shaped like ships, tents or other items on the ends of a bed or around a chest of drawers. Wallpaper trim comes in every kind of theme imaginable and is easy to apply. If you do not want to use the glue, place two strips of thin molding on the top and bottom of the wallpaper trim. This makes it easier to remove and replace as themes change through the years.
