Do it Yourself: Using Your Own Art and Photos to Decorate Your Home

One medium many “non-artsy” people feel comfortable using is photography. For this tutorial you do NOT have to go out and buy a fancy digital camera. You can use whatever camera you have; whether it be digital or 35mm. If you don’t have a camera, you can easily go purchase a disposable 35mm camera.

Step 1) Pick the room that you want to decorate and think of what photos fit with the theme of that room. Get your camera and go to where you can find objects or places to fit that theme. For example, if you want to go for more architectural pictures, take a visit to the city. If you want nature photos, you can easily wander into your own backyard.

Step 2) When you get to your ideal location, walk around and pick out things that look interesting to you and would look even better as a picture on your wall. Remember: Take your time and decide on what you want to take pictures of. Once you decide on exactly what you want, start snapping!

Useful Photography Hints: Try different perspectives. Think to yourself “Why is this photo interesting?” and “How could I make this a better photo?”. Always think before snapping! For example, if you’re taking pictures in your garden, don’t be afraid to get down and take pictures at eye level. If you’re taking pictures at a beach, try photographing different things; the sand, the water, people, seashells, etc. Take pictures of things upclose and far-away, from eye level and from an upperview.

Step 3) Once you have gone through your entire roll of film or have gotten the photos you wanted, take the film or your digital media card (if using a digital camera) to have your photos processed. Once the photos are all processed and printed on normal sized (6×4) photo paper, choose which photos you like best. Feel free to choose as many as you like.

Printing Hint: Photos can also be printed in black and white.

Step 4) Pick out some photos to be blown up to larger photo sizes (5×7, 8×10, 11×14, etc). Use different sizes or all the same size.

Sizing Hint: You can even cut your photos to different sizes, but be sure to use accurate measurements for both the photo and the frame!

Step 5) Visit a local art shop or even thrift store to pick out frames for your photos. There are literally millions of possibilities for frames. They can be fancy and elaborate or basic and modern. Some frames even hold numerous photos. Remember to keep the set up and theme of the room you’re decorating in mind.

Step 6) After you have the photos printed in the sizes you want and the frames picked out for every photo, frame your photos and decide on how you want them laid out in the room. You may or may not need to use nails in the wall or another way to hold the frames.

Decorating Hint: You can make either a collage on one wall, group certain photos together, or spread them out however you like.

Step 7) After your pictures are hung on the wall as you want them, you are done! Be proud of your art work and be sure to show your friends and family!
