Don’t Blink
Liberty hill is the one stop – light town of Bertram. The first time I drove into Bertram, I asked myself what had I done. There was nothing to the town. There was two cafes’, three convent stores, one privately owned grocery store and that was about it. When I asked for peace, I did not know my husband decided nothing was better.
After living in the city of Austin for over two years I earned for a change. My husband’s solution to my problem was a small town in Burnet (pronounced burn-it) We moved into the neighborhood of Sunset Oaks seven years ago. The first night we were there, our neighbors came over with a pitcher of Margaret’s. After a couple of drinks and a hand of cards, we knew their entire life story going back a couple of generations. I was amazed by how open and friendly they seemed to be.
It did not take us long to realize that Bertram had no secrets, and what the people of the town did not know, they made up. I had always enjoyed my privacy and I was not getting much of it. I was on the verge of telling my husband that I wanted to go back to Austin when I started working at the Bertram Nursing Home (the largest employer in the town). I began talking to the residents of the nursing home and began to make true friends.
While working at the home, I learned about the history of the small town and its citizens. Almost everyone is related in some fashion, they take their Burnet Bull Dogs (high school football) serous, and they value family above all else. It is an universal feeling in the town that if you need something, just ask. The town and the people in it have become family to me. I have learned more about human nature and their capacity to do good in the short time that I have lived in Bertram than any were I have ever lived before.
If you are looking for recreation, there are things to do. One could spend their Friday nights, at the all you can eat catfish buffet at the Bertram caf©.. There is also the Hungry Moose, which is a combination of gift shop, eatery. If you are into history, check out the old bed and breakfast and walk around. If that does not catch your interest, check out one of the many highland lakes in Burnet County. There is the canyon of the eagles that rents cabins and takes people on boat tours.
You can also go hiking at Shafer’s bend. Maybe you would like to check out many of the local swimming wholes where you might see a kid or two jumping off the old bridge. There are bake sales, yard sales, musicians, and a few more things that I can think of at this moment.
