Downtown Boise Stores for Holiday Shopping

Downtown Boise loves Christmas. Every year, the pine tree light are ceremoniously lit on top of the US Bank tower, and the lighting of the Christmas tree in front of the Capital Building is a huge deal. (I hope that they steer clear of the yellow support our troops decorations this yearA Christmas tree is a poor platform for politics, in my opinion.) You can ride the trolley for free during the Christmas in the City celebration, and stores have lots of festive events taking place all through the month. There is a lot to do and see during December, as well as plenty of downtown shopping to buy all of your gifts. Here are some good places to start that are all within ten blocks of each other:

Dragonfly- This downtown Boise boutique has perfect Christmas presents for both young and older women (some things can be found for men, too.) People always come to Dragonfly for the jewelry, but one of its best kept secrets is its clothing selections. They have some really great, eclectic stuff here, for a good price. You can also get nice holiday scented candles, gift wrapping paper, and a huge selection of bizarre Christmas cards.

Villano’s- This is a good place to go to buy holiday treats for others, of yourself. Villano’s does some of the best catering in Boise, and the Italian retail store downtown makes amazing gift baskets. Send someone some of their high grad olive oil, chocolate, and spices. Or plan your own meal around their menu, and save yourself some work.

The Flying M gift shop- Not only does the Flying M have some of Boise’s best coffee, they also have a great little gallery/gift shop that carries an amazing array of different gift ideas. At Christmastime, you can find oddball cards and fun stocking stuffers, as well as nice pieces by local artists. This is a good place to go if you would like to find something that expresses a sense of humor this Christmas, or if you would just like something out o the norm.

Brown’s Gallery- This is a great place to buy a nice present for someone who appreciates art. Brown’s specializes in paintings and pottery, and many times, you’ll find local artists on display. You can also buy high quality prints here, if you would like to spend a little less.

Kandor- This home and kitchen store is amazing during Christmas. They always have some of the best decorations you can find, as well as all those artful accessories that will make your holiday meal look as good as it tastes. You can always come in for a cooking class, too, as they are held in the in store kitchen throughout the year. They also always have coffee for these cold Boise shopping days. This is a great place to find gifts for people who have just moved into their first home, or for anyone who likes high quality house items.

Barbara, Barbara- Whether you need a gift for the lady of your life, or you are that lady, and need something to wear, this is a great choice. This boutique carries pieces that have clearly been purchased from all over the place- far different that the mall selection. This is a good place to come for that perfect party dress.

Ishi Nights- also an excellent place for party dresses – and party hand bags, shoes, and hair accessories. Ishi Nights offers amazing gowns that are unique and elegant. The prices aren’t bad, considering what you are getting.

Idaho Camera- Locally owned and centrally located (there is another branch out by Saint Alphonsus hospital,) Idaho camera is one of the top camera stores in the city. They have a knowledgeable, friendly staff that will help you find that perfect present. Plus, they have some really good deals around the holidays, both on equipment and on film (and film development.)

The Record Exchange- If you have a music lover in the family, or want to pick up some holiday music for next to nothing, come here. They have great Christmas specials, carry one of the most diverse music selections in Idaho, and their used CD selection is excellent. You can also find small gifts and cards.

Macy’s- Come here for your standard decorations, for clothing and home gifts, or just to take a picture with Santa. The downtown store is not quite as big as the one at the mall, but is undergoing renovations, and the atmosphere is much more pleasant.

First Thursday- This event is held the first Thursday of every month in downtown during the evening. Artists and food vendors display their wares for your shopping and appreciating pleasure. Around Christmas, things take on a more festive note, and you can find some nice gifts not sold anywhere else. And treat yourself to some holiday goodies while you’re walking around. Cruise through the local stores, as many of them feature entertainment of some kind from 5-9:00 PM.
