Drive-In Movie Theaters in Wisconsin

The drive-in movie theatre first became an attraction in 1933; it was run by its inventor Richard Hollingshead in New Jersey, as a test in his own backyard. Within six years, eighteen theatres had popped up along the East Coast and began to filter into the southern and western states. The baby boom in the late 1940s fueled the popularity of the attraction, and became most popular during the 1950s. Many theaters began to feature pony rides, animal shows, miniature golf, and trains as additional entertainment. The car hops were another popular activity, and food sales and service became a quick addition to the many drive-in theaters.
