Easy Magnetic Hammer

What you’ll need:
Claw hammer
Large button magnet
Gorilla glue or another appropriate adhesive

You might not immediately connect a handyman or construction worker with magnets but there can definitely be a relationship. If roof repairs have been done it’s a good idea to pull through the yard with a dragging magnet to gather any dropped nails. A handyman might also install a long magnet on a wall in the kitchen to hold knives, metal measuring things, and more. But one magnet that can really be helpful – but to the handyman, not the person having the repairs done – is a hammer magnet. Some hammers have magnetic heads; they’re expensive but so helpful. If you use a hammer a lot you’ll appreciate a very quick craft where you can take an ordinary hammer and turn it into a magnetic one. Take the nails out from between your lips and let the hammer do the work for you.

If you buy a magnetic hammer it’s the head that is magnetic. The flat part, used for doing the actual hammering, is the magnet. You can touch the flat head on a nail or a tack and pick it right up. The magnetic hammer is really useful when you’re already holding something with one hand or if you’re on a ladder and don’t want to step down a couple of rungs to reach the nails. But the magnet doesn’t absolutely have to be in the head. If you make a magnetic hammer you can install the magnet at the end of the handle. You’ll find the project super quick and very cheap.

A round magnet can be found in a pack of several at a craft or home improvement store. Choose a magnet that’s nearly the size of the end of the hammer handle. Use an adhesive that will work for metal as well as wood, such as Gorilla Glue. Follow the instructions on the product to attach the button magnet to the hammer handle.

With the magnet in place, a handyman or carpenter can work with less aggravation and save a lot of money over purchasing a magnetic hammer. If you know you’ll be hammering four nails, for example, you can stick them all to the end of the hammer, and climb up wherever you need to be. You won’t have to go up and down a ladder to get nails and you’ll never have to hold them between your lips again.
