Easy Ways to Clean a Memory Foam Mattress Pad
I had a thick memory foam mattress pad on my king size bed, and I shared it with my dog and cat. Unfortunately, the dog vomited on the covers, and it soaked through to the memory foam mattress pad. I had to find an easy way to clean it. I could not simply toss it into the washing machine as I had the old covering. I already knew how to clean a microfiber sofa, and I put what I knew into action. I was able to clean my new memory foam mattress pad and completely restore it.
Precautionary Statement
When in doubt, use the following method to clean a small corner before using an extensive amount on a memory foam mattress pad. Also, remove it from the bed before getting started. If necessary, place something beneath it to protect the work area. The cleaning solution will soak through the foam and onto the surface below.
Begin by Removing Solids and Soaking Up the Moisture
It is important to remove all solids and soak up the moisture before attempting to clean a memory foam mattress pad. When picking up the solids, do not smear it around. Pull it straight up using paper towels. Wiping will only create a larger mess.
Next, use paper towels to soak up as much moisture as possible. Press down on the toweling to absorb the liquid. If necessary, use an entire roll of paper towels when trying to clean a memory foam mattress pad. The more liquid that can be pulled out before using the cleaning solution, the more likely it will come out clean. Simply mixing the solution with the stain will not clean the material.
Create a Solution of Baking Soda, Water and Dish Soap
To thoroughly clean the memory foam mattress pad, mix about one quarter cup of baking soda with one quart cool of water. Add one small drop of dishwashing liquid to the mix. Soak the cleaning solution into the memory foam mattress pad. Avoid areas that were not stained.
Soak Up the Clean Water with a Wet/Dry Vacuum
Next, soak away the cleaning solution with a wet/dry vacuum or absorbent toweling or rags. Rinse the memory foam mattress pad with clear water and a clean rag. Vacuum or soak up the moisture again. If it is stained or foul smelling, repeat the process. In any case, sprinkle it with baking soda after soaking up the moisture. Allow it to dry naturally. If possible, drape it over a clothesline or a porch rail. Otherwise, use a fan on low speed to hasten the drying process. After the baking soda soaks up the moisture and dries completely, vacuum it away. Your memory foam mattress pad should be clean and free from odors.
