Eggshell Flower Pot – a How-to Guide

Eggshell flower pots – a great craft for kids or an elegant project for adults.

You will need the following materials:

Eggshells that have been hollowed out (directions on how to do this are below)

Very sharp knife

Small square piece of cardboard

Low temp glue gun

Paint or markers

Potting soil

Various seeds

In order to prepare the eggshells for this craft you need to hollow them out. I find that the best way to do this is to take a cork screw with a sharp point and create a small hole on both ends of the egg. Then gently blow the contents out and into a bowl (this is a great thing to do before breakfast!)

Once the eggshells have been hollowed you need to cut off (or crack if you’re talented) the top 1/3 of the shell. You do not need to do this is a straight line, in fact it will look better if you make jagged edges. This is probably the hardest part of the craft but don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect, every eggshell flower pot is always unique. If you’re doing this project with children make sure an adult cuts the egg and warns the children that the edges will be a little rough.

Next, take a small piece of cardboard and using the low temp glue gun, glue the cardboard to the bottom of the egg to create a little base to keep it standing. Hold the egg in place until the glue hardens which should only take a minute or two.

If you’re working with young children, give them markers to decorate their eggshell flower pot any way they want. More advanced crafters can use paint to make them as fun or as fancy as they want. If using paint, wait for the egg to dry before continuing.

Fill the egg approximately 2/3 full with potting soil, place your seeds on the surface, and cover with more soil. Water your plant on a regular basis and keep in an area which will receive some direct sunlight. When working with younger children grass seeds are good to use because they will start to grow within a couple days but you can use any type of seed that you want.

These pots are very fragile and will not last forever as the eggshells will eventually begin to decompose but should last long enough for your seeds to at least begin growing at which point you can transplant them in the ground or a larger pot.

Eggshell flower pots make cute crafts for the kids but can also be decorated in a way to make them very elegant and can be used as party favors. You can even personalize each eggshell pot to create name tags.

This is a great project as both adults and children can have fun with it together and although they won’t last forever, the memories of your time spent together can.
