Eight Things You Can Make from an Old Cabinet

If you’re remodeling your kitchen, or you just have an old cabinet out in the garage, there’s many things you can make instead of throwing the cabinet away. Each cabinet project is cheap and easy to make and you’ll have some new fabulous decor pieces for your home when you’re finished.

One great project that uses an old cabinet is a footstool. Take the door off of the cabinet, turn the cabinet upside-down, then attach casters. Cover the cabinet in padding and the top with a piece of foam. Use an ordinary staple gun to attach fabric to the new footstool.

If the old cabinet is a tall one it’ll make a great window seat for your living room or den. Cover it with padding and foam, like with the footstool project, and add wheels if desired. Scoot it in front of a window or simply set it against a wall somewhere for an extra seat. You can cover it in waterproof fabric, like canvas, and se tit out on the deck for extra seating, too.

Another outdoor craft you can do with the old cabinet is to screw some legs onto the cabinet and use it for storing pool toys or outdoor toys. Remove the shelves to give yourself more room inside the cabinet or set it upright and lock it to hold pool or lawn chemicals.

In the garage, set the cabinet upright on wheels. Use the cabinet to store tools. Attach a piece of plywood to the top and you’ll have an extra work station, too. Since the cabinet is wheeled it makes it easy to move it around the garage as needed.

Remove the lid from the cabinet and add legs. Set in a child’s room to hold toys. You can leave the cabinet door on for older children but younger children could get hurt if the cabinet door slams, so remove it for young kids.

Put an old cabinet on wheels or legs and top with wood, glass or marble. This makes a great night stand that has handy shelves for books, medicine, and other things. Cut fabric pieces out to decorate the front or just paint a new color. Make sure the cabinet is the right size by setting it next to the bed before continuing with the project.

An old cabinet with a glass door makes an interesting conversation piece table. Set the cabinet on legs and open the doors. Arrange pictures, a sea scene, or silk flowers, then shut the doors and park the display somewhere so people can see it when they visit.

People aren’t so quick to throw old, used items away anymore – not with all the fabulous crafts and home decor projects you can do with them. Cabinets are just one example of an item that used to be discarded or burned, but now can be turned into something nice for your home.
