Experience New York City
One of the most famous parks in the nation, Central Park is right smack in the middle of Manhattan. The park consists of 843 acres worth of land and greenery. Although there has been large belief that Central Park (and New York, for that matter) has been riddled with crime, the truth couldn’t be more opposite. Crime has dropped significantly throughout
the past decade. Even though the park is located right in the middle of the island, there are tons of activities you can participate in. Playgrounds for children, two ice-skating rinks, walking paths, lakes, jogging/bicycling and bird watching are just some of your choices. You can even drive your vehicle through the park on the paved roads, although cars are
prohibited on weekends.
If you’re looking for something to do in the city, there’s nothing better to do then taking in a Broadway show. The theater district is based close to Times Square in Manhattan and is one of the better internationally known entertainment centers in the world. Such successful plays/musicals as Spamalot, The Lion King, Rent and Mamma Mia are currently playing in more than ten theaters.
“The World’s Most Famous Arena,” Madison Square Garden is located at 33rd Street and 7th Avenue. Home to some of the most memorable sporting moments in history, MSG is still the home to the NBA’s Knicks, WNBA’s Liberty and NHL’s Rangers. The events which made MSG famous were the two fights between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, WWF Wrestlemania, and world championships won by the Knicks and Rangers. MSG is also home to star studded concerts by performers like the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Paul McCartney and U2.
If it’s education you’re looking for, then the Metropolitan Museum of Art or American Museum of Natural History are just two of the historic venues for you. Classic works of art and diagrams are housed there. They are great places to take the family to and make a day out of it. You can learn about dinosaurs, American history, foreign history, space, or any of a variety of topics.
Stop by 2nd Avenue in Manhattan at the Comic Strip where comedy is at its best. Many of today’s star comedians began their careers at the Strip. Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, George Wallace and Dave Attell are just some of the many notables. With an 18 year-old age requirement, the club holds shows every night of the week. Be safe and call in a reservation if you plan on attending a weekend show.
Ofcourse you’ll have to eat and there are plenty of fine eateries around the city. All you have to do is just look. Take a trip to Coney Island and the famous Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs. Nothing gets better than walking down the boardwalk with a dog in hand. Just a walk away is also Keyspan Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets Minor League Affiliate). While the Dodgers are long gone, the Cyclones have a unique fan base and present an experience that’s hard to match elsewhere.
Once your in New York City, don’t be afraid to use the City’s famed subway system. Operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the system is the worlds biggest transit system consisting of over 600 miles of track. Staten Island is the only borough which doesn’t use the system. Along with the subways, the MTA operates a full bus system which helps commuters.
New York City is the capital of the world for a reason. Whether your visiting for a few days or a week, or living in the city you’ll never be bored. There will always be something new to do or experience.
