Fall 2013 Television: Best Picks
One of my favorite things about the fall is the exciting new TV shows. Some fall short, but others have been better than expected. For the first time in years, I have actually been able to sit down and watch TV on a nightly basis. Fall of 2013 has had many good new shows. Which ones are the best of the best?
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.(ABC)
If you are a fan of Marvel, then you are nearly guaranteed to love this show. If you’re not a Marvel fan, then Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s action packed episodes will convert you. While comic book TV shows are not uncommon [Smallville, Arrow], AoS is unlike others. It has direct connects to the Marvel CInematic Universe as well as the comic books. It uses plots like Extreamis from Iron Man 3 and Super Soldier Serum from Captain America. The characters are key in this show. All creating a multipersonality dimension. Fan-favorite Phil Coulson returns from the dead, Melinda May shows that Mulan still kicks ass (Ming-Na Wen provided the voice of Mulan in Disney’s Mulan). FItzsimmons: The adorable sciencegeeks that you cannot help but love. Skye and Grant ward trying to learn new things and work as a team. This show is a must try. I have been hooked ever since the pilot episode. It is an hour show, action packed every episode. Every week being better than the last.
Sleepy Hollow (Fox)
Sleepy Hollow is quite possibly my favorite new show. It is unlike anything I have seen on tv. Historical fiction has never been so cool. Sleepy Hollow is a modern day take on the Headless Horseman legend. It has a bit of everything: action, comedy, suspense, heartache and more. One of the best things about the show is main character Ichabod Crane: A soldier from the revolutionary war, resurrected with the horseman. It is impossible not to love Crane. I enjoy how the show pokes fun at modern day things he does not understand, yet they stress how intelligent he really is. Unlike most shows, Sleepy Hollow has a person of color female as their primary character: Lieutenant Abbie Mills. It is refreshing to have a strong female character in the forefront. The chemistry between Abbie and Ichabod is amazing and they work great together. Every character no matter how small has a significance. Sleepy Hollow connects the past with the present, historical with fiction and mythology with fact. Nobody will be disappointed.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (ABC)
Despite its weak ratings, this show is surprisingly good. What attracted me to this show was it’s connection to my favorite Disney movie: Alice in Wonderland. Alice is now all grown up and in love. If you are a hopeless romantic then this show is for you. In Wonderland also has an Aladdin twist. One of the shows villains is none other than Jafar, and Alice’s love interest is the Genie named Cyrus. Even though it sound weird, it surprisingly works really well. The pilot episode was a bit slow, and it took about thirty minutes in to get interesting. However, ever episode since then has left me craving for more. ABC has plans to do crossover episodes with Once Upon a Time. Consider it Disney for grownups. If you love Disney, action, adventure and romance, then Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is the show for you.
The Goldberg’s (ABC)
The 80’s are back and they have never been better. The Goldberg’s focuses on the adventures of Adam Goldberg and his family as they grow up in the 80’s. Despite its comedic tone, I feel like almost any family can relate to it somehow. What makes a ‘family’ show so great is when a family is not squeaky clean but not annoyingly funny. The Goldberg’s has this chemistry, since it is based on actual events that creator Adam Goldberg videotaped during his childhood. This show is almost like a pop culture time machine. Suddenly the 80’s are back in style. The hair, the clothes, and the buck are in. Even if you have never experince the 80’s, The Goldberg’s gives the viewer a first person point of view of what they 80’s were really like. Not since Roseanne, can I think of a comedy that accurately portrays the average American life. It is comedic gold and heartwarming.
The Crazy Ones (CBS)
In recent years CBS has dominated prime time television in all genres. They once again hit it with one of their new comedies: The Crazy Ones. The cast is full of familiar faces included Robin Williams as Simon Roberts, who works at an advertisement agency with his daughter. Robin Williams has probably stared in at least one of your favorite movies. Everything Robin Williams does is almost guaranteed to make you laugh. As is proven in The Crazy Ones. Sarah Michelle Geller plays his daughter Sydney. What I love about the show is watching Geller and Williams bounce off of each other. If you ever need a good laugh for a half hour, this is the show for you. From star to finish this show is entertaining.
