PRAIRIE FESTIVAL
It is well known in Texas that prairie dog colonies are in great danger due to poisoning and habitat loss throughout the prairie ecosystem. Prairie dogs play an important role as an anchor for a prairie system. It is because of this that when they are gone all other species associated with them such as the Burrowing Owl and Ferruginous Hawk will also become extinct. The Prairie Festival was created to educate and create interest and curiosity among the public about the importance of the prairie.
The Prairie Festival is an indoor event that offers 25 booths, speakers on prairie science, ecology and restoration and much more. They also have fun and interesting things to buy, food, drinks and music. Booths range from those of government agencies such as Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to booths from national organizations such as National Audubon Society and The Nature Conservancy. Also there are general booths that are occupied by regional and local organizations and individuals. Included in these booths is great hands-on entertainment for kids.
One day during the duration of the festival a charter bus offers field trips to the prairie habitats to talk abut the prairie species and to tell about their historical background.
