That is just a bit too late. Find out where the circuit breaker box is, or if you live in an older house, where the fuse box is.
Before you lose power, make sure the circuit breakers are labeled, letting you know which breakers control which outlets. Also learn how to figure out which ones need to be turned back on and how to do it. It is pretty simple, but sometimes it helps to have someone walk you through the process.
In the case of fuse boxes, determining which fuse to replace can be tricky, especially if there is no diagram or labeling system. Learn how to distinguish a good fuse from a burnt out fuse, and keep some extra fuses handy.

If you don’t have fire extinguishers in the house, don’t skip this step. Invest in at least one fire extinguisher for each floor of your house. Keep one in the kitchen. Learn how to check the pressure of the fire extinguisher, and when it needs to be replaced

For central air systems, the air conditioner filter needs to be cleaned before or at the end of the air conditioning season. Depending on how often you run the air conditioner, you may also want to replace it monthly. If you live in a managed apartment complex in a hot climate, the rental office may supply you with one free filter per month if you ask.

This is one that you cannot really do on your own. It is important to have the heating system checked once a year, and have it cleaned. This takes a phone call and some money. If you schedule the heating system maintenance for the end of the heating system, you will not have to worry about going without heat. When you need the heat in the colder months, the heating system will be ready to go and run efficiently.

Cleaning out the dryer is an important way to avoid a dryer fire. Do not just clean out the little lint screen. Also clean out the slot where the lint screen lives. Move the dryer out so the back can also be cleaned. Lint collects behind and underneath a dryer, and can affect efficiency and create a fire hazard.
