Five Ways to Store and Protect Items Found Under the Sink

When it comes to finding ways to store items, many of us turn to the area under the sink. However, no matter how hard a person tries this area can easily and quickly get overcrowded and very cluttered. Storing items under the sink takes a little bit of creativity. Below you will find five tips to keeping that space neat, while protecting your items as well.

1. Plastic storage boxes with lids

I personally really like the plastic storage boxes that have lids to put under both the kitchen sinks and the bathroom sink. You also have the option of using see through bins or non-see through bins. If you use the bins that you can not see through be sure to take the time and label them so that everyone in the family knows what is inside. The reason for picking bins with a lid is simply to ensure that nothing leaks into the storage bins. Sometimes pipes under the sink can leak. If you have all of your items in bins you will not have to worry about everything getting messed up. Instead you will only have to wipe off the bins. You can use the bins to store bars of soap, paper towels, toilet paper, or whatever other items you prefer.

2. Put the door to good use

Most under sink areas have doors on them. This is precious space that should be used. You can easily place hooks on the doors so that you can hang those extra items that you use frequently. Like your wash rags or hand towels. Hooks are inexpensive and can be easily installed.

3. Protect the bottoms of the storage space

Keeping the bottoms of the shelves clean as well as water proof can help with your storage organization. It will also help to make your storage space look nice as well. Some like to use paper to line the bottom of the shelves, but I have found old, or discounted place mats to work best for this area. You can easily secure place mats to the bottom of the drawers by gluing them down. Only do this if you don’t plan on moving any time soon. You can use books to secure the place mats while the glue is drying.

4. Hide the garbage can

I have to admit that I really like the idea of a hidden garbage can. If you have enough space under the sink, it may be a good idea to place the garbage can under it. This way your garbage will not be seen. Small garbage cans work best for this. Although they do have to be emptied more frequently, because they are small it helps to keep your living space cleaner.

5. Make cleaning supplies portable

Your supplies that are used most often, should be kept in the front and easily accessible. This will help to keep the under sink area organized and neat. Some like to have a basket for their cleaning items so that they are easy to transport.
