Flip Cup – Drinking Game

Flip cup also referred to as taps, cups, or turbo, this is a team based drinking game. This is very similar to boat race and relay race. For this game you need two teams of at least 3 people on a team. You will need beer and plastic keg cups for this game to work properly.

The rules are easy enough to follow; two teams stand on both sides of a table, facing each other. Each player has a cup filled with some amount of liquor or beer in from of them. The race will start with the first member of the team drinks his or her cup. When finished they place the cup at the edge of the table right side up, the person who drank the cup then tries to flip it upside down onto the table. If they are not successful on the first try they must continue reset the cup and try to flip the cup upside down until they are successful; before the next person can start drinking their beer. Once the cup is flipped successfully then the next person in the row can drink, and they in turn try to flip their cup. It continues down the line until the last person in the line finishes their drink and flips the cup upside down. What ever team does this the fastest are declared the winners of that match. The number of matches is equal to the number of players on a team, if there are four players then there must be four matches and the team that wins the most matches wins the game.

Variations of this game can include the removal or substitution of player from a losing team to make the teams fairer or just to allow other players a chance to play. If a player is substituted the new player takes over their position. If a player is removed their cup stays and the team selects a current player to take that cup in addition to their own cup. The game is over when one team either loses all of its players, or decides that they cannot continue.

You can also play Survivor Flip Cup. This version of the game all players will start drinking at the same time, the last player to drink their cup and flip it upside down is eliminated. This continues until there is one person left and they are declared the Survivor.

Another version of Survivor Flip Cup is like the TV show. This version follows the same rules as the normal game but after each round, the losing team votes off one of their players. The rest of the team has to make up for the missing player; the team still must keep the same number of cups even as players are eliminated. So 5 players are accountable for 5 cups then if three players have been voted off then the remaining two players are accountable for the 5 cups of beer. This continues until there is only one player remaining and he loses the race against the other team.

Another version called Jungle rules Flip Cup is where everyone on each team starts at the same time and the first team to have all their players drink the beer in the cups and successfully flip their cups wins the match, again with the same number of matches as there are players on a team.

King of the Table rules (also known by elimination flip cup)
This is a mix of the rules from jungle and survivor. All players will start a game and all players will drink their beer and flip their cups, the last player to finish is voted off. This is continued until there is only one player left, they are the winner. A very important rule to KOT is that you may not leave the table until you lose or the game is over.

Down and back is the last version that is widely played, mainly in the Midwest. This variation of the game proceeds as normal to the last player in the line, after each player successfully flips their cup they then refill it with the right amount of beer. After the anchor successfully flips their cup they drink a second cup of beer (usually prepared before the game starts) and then play proceeds back up the line to the person who started the game. The anchor must also flip their second cup of beer successfully which adds pressure on this player to be successful in a quick fashion.
