Four Fabulous Home Decor Items You Can Make with Shutters

Whether you’re removing your old shutters to update the look of your house, or you simply found a great deal on shutters at a flea market, they make some wonderful additions to the inside of your home – when you make them into something totally different.

Shutters come in various sizes which makes it easy to make an assortment of household items in a size that will fit the space you have to spare. One thing that takes up little space but is beautiful and easy to make is a plant stand. The stand can be made from four shutters of small to medium size. Stand a shutter up on one end then place another at a ninety degree angle. Nail them together. Add the next shutter, then the last, to make a shutter stand that’s square and tall. Now use a piece of wood, like an old cutting board or a different object, to place on top of the shutters. Paint the shutters and cutting board or leave them as-is. Place a plant on top and you’ve got a unique stand for any room of the house.

Lay a long shutter out on a table or the floor and attach a small wooden piece near each corner on the backside. These wooden pieces will serve as legs for this project. Now nail a square piece of wood, or something similar, to each end of the shutter. Stack another shutter – the same size as the first – to the wooden sides. Nail into place. This little arrangement makes a great shoe stand. Use it in the laundry room to dry shoes or place it in a convenient location to set muddy or wet shoes after coming inside. You can also place it in a closet and use it to hold an entire collection of shoes. Use really long shutters if you have the room, but if not, short shutters will make a small shoe rack for you.

Nail a small block of wood to each corner on the backside of a shutter. Smaller shutters work best for this project. Nail the shutter to the wall with the wooden blocks between the wall and the shutter. This leaves just enough space for using the shutter to hold belts, scarves and other items. Hang one shutter on each side of a window – on the inside – for a cute look to a girl’s room that’s also functional.

Knock out the louvers on shutters and you have a huge double picture frame that would be expensive to purchase. Use the frames to house posters, unique wallpaper designs or your own artwork. The shutter picture frame makes a large room look cozier. You don’t have to hang the shutters vertically, either. Hang one behind the couch in a horizontal manner, then a pair of them across the room and vertical to showcase artwork.

Nowadays you can make zillions of things from old, worn items that are normally thrown out with the garbage. If you have old shutters put them to good use. Try one of the creations above and you’ll have a cute new decor item for your home in no time.
