Four Places to Locate Skilled Cabinetmakers in Raleigh

Wow!

That’s what any ‘Proud’ homeowner would like to hear when someone new enters there home. There are few things that can lead to a ‘Wow!’ like outstanding furniture.

Raleigh, like many growing and thriving cities is attracting the best in every area. It is a little sporadic at times, just how the attraction works, but just as in medicine, art and food; Raleigh is attracting some excellent woodworkers.

Some have come from schooled backgrounds and others have moved into it from the trades. Often young men (and women) who build houses, particularly custom houses have an immediate attraction for the art potential of fine woodworking.

Before the industrial revolution all furniture was created by cabinet makers.

Some was a lot like the crooked bookshelves I build, with less than a keen eye to design. Other pieces are like the works of art my son, a carpenter by trade, builds; jewels of design and wonders of construction. His works are unique and a true reflection of the inner quality the artist/cabinet maker brings to his trade.

One practitioner of the trade in Raleigh is:

Terry L Self Cabinet Maker
1028 Hammell Dr
Raleigh, NC 27603

(919) 831-0900

We usually think of cabinet makers, these days, as the folks who build custom cabinets for the kitchen. Not so!

It is true they will build your kitchen cabinets if you so desire, but that is only the beginning.

Say you would like to put a wooden fireplace mantle and book shelves into the wall of your family room. Of course you want the best money can buy, within your budget’s limits.

You cannot buy these at Home Depot, Lowe’s or your local hardware store. Though they may carry bookshelves and the materials that are needed for a mantle, it takes a real inventive person to design and build a first class piece of furniture for you.

One person you might call in Raleigh is:

Cardinal Cabinetworks
701 Pershing Road Raleigh, NC 27608

(919) 829-3634

Their master cabinetmakers would probably jump at the chance to design your ‘Wow!’ for you. Can you imagine the looks on the faces of your relatives when the see a blend of fine American Walnut and Ash adorning your room. (you would need to consult the cabinetmaker on the wood choice, my projects always look genuine country style) (PS my wife does not think I have any sense of color coordination either)
Fortunately, these fine cabinet makers do know how furniture works and the right woods to go into enhancing the beauty and charm of your home.

Another cabinet maker that may be able to help you is:

Damino Cabinets
3208 Wellington Ct
Raleigh, NC 27615

(919) 855-0190

One thing about cabinet makers; they tend to specialize in the areas that they like. Unlike other wood workers, many cabinet makers are truly in it for the love of fine woods. I knew one fellow who would only work in rare hardwoods. He loved solving for the difficult color matching and intricate workmanship required. He was, as you might guess, very expensive. But if you wanted a true one of a kind, in a wood whose name you couldn’t pronounce, he was your guy.

If you would like it done in wood you recognize, here is one other person you might consider:

Bullock’s Cabinets
2505 Friendly Trail
Raleigh, NC

(919) 829-0305

In addition to cabinets, mantles and bookcases most good cabinet makers can produce any piece of furniture or decoration that can be made of wood. Some limit themselves to items that can be easily priced and others enjoy the challenge and haggling on the work and cost that a unique object will entail.

The introduction of items like computers and similar devices has created a niche for cabinet makers that know how to hide these in furniture while keeping the functionality in tact.

Good wishes on your journey to ‘Wow!’.
