Gas

These camping lanterns are lightweight, usually weighing less than four ounces. They are also the least expensive to operate. However, they don’t produce a strong light output. Also, the candle can be blown out in strong winds.
Butane
There are also camping lanterns that use butane. These lanterns can sometimes be filled with lighter fluid so you can carry the fuel easily. There are also designs that will let you use reflectors to focus light in a specific area. The main problem with these camping lanterns is that they don’t perform well in freezing temperatures.
Electric
One of the most popular types of camping lanterns is the electric variety. These lanterns can usually be dimmed to save power from the batteries. Electric camping lanterns are also safer because there is no open flame that can start a fire. However, you will have to bring spare batteries with you. Electric lanterns usually weigh more than other designs.
There are also electric camping lanterns that can be recharged. You can recharge the batteries using the accessory outlet in your car. However, rechargeable camping lanterns usually do not produce as much light as other designs. The batteries also won’t last as long as the regular batteries will.
