Four Types of Diamond Tip Drill Bits
Blunt Nose
One of the first types of diamond tip drill bits is the blunt nose variety. These diamond bits are typically used on glass. Blunt nose tips aren’t designed to be used on extremely hard materials like porcelain tile or stone. These diamond tip drill bits have a solid tip with diamonds located on the end and sides. They work by grinding a hole that is the size of the tip. They are only effective for drilling small holes because they drill out the complete hole.
Core
One of the next types of diamond tip drill bits is the core design. These bits are commonly used to work with porcelain, ceramic, glass, and porcelain tile. Instead of having a solid tip, these bits are hollow at the end. They have diamonds located up the sides and along the edge of the tip. These diamond tip drill bits create a circle that is the size of the tip instead of drilling a complete hole. Since they don’t drill a complete hole, they work faster than blunt nose tips. These diamond tip drill bits are also capable of drilling larger holes.
Bonded
There are also bonded diamond tip drill bits. They have diamonds that are bonded to the edge of the tip. These drill bits are relatively inexpensive, but have to be used at slow speeds. These diamond tip drill bits will eventually wear down due to the hardness of the material that is being drilled. They are not suitable for use on concrete, masonry, or metal. You will also have to lubricate the tip with water to prevent it from getting too hot.
Sintered
One of the final types of diamond tip drill bits is the sintered variety. They have diamonds that are embedded directly into the tip. New diamonds rise to the surface as the tip wears down. These diamond tip drill bits can usually be used on masonry, metal, or concrete. Unlike the bonded variety, these can be used at higher speeds. They will also last longer than bonded diamond tip drill bits. The main disadvantage of these diamond bits is that they are very expensive.
