Frankfort Avenue Trolley a Louisville Tradition

If you’re looking for something fun, cheap, and entertaining to do in Louisville, Kentucky, on the last Friday of the month, may I suggest F.A.T Friday? No, it’s not a new restaurant or club. F.A.T. stands for ‘Frankfort Avenue Trolley.’ And this has quickly become a feather in Louisville’s entertainment cap.

You’re invited to explore the local culture of Louisville’s historic Frankfort Avenue the last Friday of the month, January through November. Hop on and off the free trolley all the way up and down the street. Shops and galleries stay open later on this night, welcoming visitors who may not usually get to experience Frankfort Avenue during the workweek. Enjoy free snacks and beverages while you browse, too. Park your car anywhere along Frankfort Avenue, and the trolley will do the rest. Most parking is free and close to a trolley stop.

Shops vary from antiques to pottery. Find nearly new clothes and accessories for men and ladies at Margaret’s Consignments and Collectibles (here’s a hint – she’ll give you a discount if you pay in cash). Keep tabs on the markdowns at Eyedia, a consignment shop where items are marked down every month. Kaviar Forge and Gallery offers a stunning array of forged metal and architectural glass items. Locate that perfect china set at one of the many antiques shops along the way. Drop in galleries like B. Deemer, which feature beautiful, interesting paintings.

When you tire of shopping, have a seat in one of Frankfort Avenue’s many dining and drinking establishments. Chow down on a plate of famous Frickled Pickles (fried dill pickle chips) at Genny’s Diner. Chill out with your favorite libation at the Red Lounge, a dimly lit, concrete-floored bar that used to be a gas station. Try a luscious wrap sandwich at CafÃ?© Lou Lou, offering the best of Louisville and Louisiana (hence the name, Lou Lou). Or how about a quick trip to the Emerald Isle via The Irish Rover restaurant and pub? (Their fish and chips cannot be beat!)

On a nice night, F.A.T Friday is a lovely walk outside. Get to know some of Louisville’s denizens, taste the unique local offerings, and be part of a growing tradition! Find out more about F.A.T Friday at http://www.fatfridayhop.org/.
