The following are examples of the types of cases accepted by Indiana Legal Services for low-income clients. Other low-income cases not mentioned may also be considered if the applicant meets the requirements for low-income free legal assistance and if the case isn’t criminal in nature.
Public Benefits for Low-Income People
Examples of public benefits are food stamps, unemployment benefits, poor relief, SSI, and TANF. Indiana residents who are low-income and have been denied benefits such as these may be able to seek free advice and/or free legal assistance through Indiana Legal Services.
Housing Issues
If you are a low-income resident of Indiana and have been wrongfully evicted or are having problems with a landlord, or if you have issues regarding foreclosure, Indiana Legal Services may be able to help.
Health Issues
Health issues regarding medicare and medicaid can be looked into by Indiana Legal Services. Other healthcare issues may also be considered.
Child Custody or Divorce Issues
Indiana Legal Services does not take cases regarding child custody or divorce unless those cases involve abuse. Even if low-income qualifies you to receive help from Indiana Legal Services, non abusive cases won’t be considered.
Educational Issues
Low-income Indiana residents having legal issues regarding vocational rehabilitation, special education services they feel they are entitled to, and issues of school expulsion may qualify for free help with Indiana Legal Services.
Employment Help
Low-income Indiana residents may qualify for employment aid. If you have been denied employment support and are in need of childcare or transportation Indiana Legal Services may be able to help.
Consumer Issues
Indiana residents who are low-income and have issues or concerns regarding collection agencies or repossessions may be able to get free legal advice or help through Indiana Legal Services. Other consumer issues of low-income Indiana residents may also be considered.
Justice Issues
If you are a low-income Indiana resident and have been denied a court-appointed lawyer in qualifying civil matters, you may be able to get free help through Indiana Legal Services.
Income Requirements for Free Legal Advice and Representation
Household income of those seeking low-income free legal assistance must be less than 125% of the poverty level in the state of Indiana. Excessive expenses that drop household income at least 125% below the poverty level will also be considered.
Indiana Legal Services has legal programs available to some other Indiana residents who don’t necessarily fall under the poverty level guideline. Call Indiana Legal Services in your county for more information on free legal services provided to those who don’t fall under the low-income guidelines required for other legal services.
Applying for Free Legal Assistance
Low-income Indiana residents seeking free assistance must call or go to their local Indiana Legal Services office during specified intake hours. Those with emergency issues can call or come in immediately. Non emergency cases and concerns will be addressed during office hours.
Be prepared to provide information regarding employment, income, household size, and details regarding your legal problem or concern. After providing all necessary information, potential clients will be contacted within a week.
