GSN Buys Dropped Shopping Game Show

GSN is adding a shopping-themed game show to its lineup just in time for the holiday spending season. “Shop ‘Til You Drop” will begin airing on the channel weekdays at 4:30pm EST starting December 2.

Remember That Show?

Long-time game show lovers will recognize “Shop ‘Til You Drop,” which ran from 1991 to 2005. There are almost 1000 episodes of the game show, a healthy dose of new programming for the Game Show Network.

“Shop” had several hosts, beginning with Pat Finn. It’s set in a shopping mall, where two teams of two compete in stunt challenges and pop culture knowledge for their opportunity to go shopping.

The team with the most points at the end of the game went on to participate in the “Shop ‘Til You Drop” bonus round. This is a shopping spree-type challenge where the final team attempts to score as many high-dollar purchases in the mall as possible. The show has been absent from TV altogether for nearly 10 years.

New History

“Shop ‘Til You Drop” ran on Lifetime until 1994 before it moved to The Family Channel and then PAX. It eventually petered out here, but not before adding hundreds of episodes to the already-packed catalog. PAX produced new episodes based on the old series and re-tooled the game for a two-year run in the early 2000s. “Shop” went off the air in 2005.

GSN has purchased the former episodes of the series, but there’s no word yet on whether they will re-vamp and re-create the game show. Over the years, GSN has brought back several former game show hits from other networks, including “The Newlywed Game” and “Minute to Win It.” Could a new version of “Shop ‘Til You Drop” be in the works?

Perhaps. But until GSN is ready to offer more, fans can still enjoy the previous episodes of the series.
