Give Birth Without Assistance or a Hospital Visit

Many women consider having their baby at home. Not because they can not afford the services of the hospital, but because they feel this is what’s best for their family. Many people believe that hospital care is not as good as many think. Hospitals have vast amounts of equipment available and have very skillful personnel ready to help in case of emergencies. However many women feel that many patients could have received similar care at home, with more love and for less money. Many Obstetricians very seldom speak to mothers in a kind gentle manner during delivery. Although some are a lot more compassionate than others. And you must keep in mind that some are overworked. Some doctors however try to force treatments on the mother despite her requests. One of every thirty-five American babies is significantly retarded, and I wonder how much of this harm is done by medical procedure in which unnecessary drugs and artificial practices, such as induced labor, are used. I don’t doubt that some lives are saved in the maternity wards. But really how many?

It is very important for a mother to receive special care before the birth of her baby. There are so many complications that can occur; for example the women may not have a large enough opening for a normal birth or a breech birth may occur. You should always check with your doctor before you make any decision. Many women choose to hire a professional midwife. Make sure that this is legal to do in your state. In some states it is illegal to pay a midwife for their services. The bottom line is however that you can have whoever you want assist with the delivery as long as there is no fee involved. Plenty of research should be done, by the parents before a final decision is made. You should ask yourself the following questions: What is needed to give birth at home? Do you prefer a clean place to squat or lie down? What special instructions are needed?

During labor and birth the mother does what her body compels her to do to bear her child, and it usually turns out to be the right thing. A women’s body was made to give birth without assistance, as long as there are no complications. There are certain preparations that should be done in order to make things more convenient and sanitary. You may want to purchase a few large plastic drop cloths at a paint store to protect the floors. Make sure you have plenty of clean sheets and towels. Also did you know that many maternal infections are not generally contracted by mothers giving birth at home, but were due to medical personnel passing on these infections when they attended to a mother in the hospital? Here are a few more things that you may want to purchase; a rubber-tipped ear syringe for clearing mucus from the baby’s nose, a pair of scissors boiled in water for cutting the umbilical cord, white hem-binding tape for tying the cord, a good supply of large sanitary napkins, and some clothes for the baby.

You should also be aware of what to do if complications do arise. If labor does not progress normally you should have in mind what hospital you would go to. Of course it should be one that is close by. Also you may need to go to the hospital after giving birth, it the uterus does not firm up, or stop bleeding. Make sure you are very family with the various stages of labor, so that nothing comes as a surprise to you. There should be plenty of people there to help care for you and the baby afterward. Someone, such as dad or grandma should be ready to give the baby their first bath. You should have a baby scale machine ready and waiting so that you can have a birth weight for the states records. These machines can be rented or brought. Make sure someone can examine the placenta to make sure all of the pieces were expelled.

In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that I do not necessarily recommend that every mother give birth at home, especially if this is your first child. But giving birth in such a warm and loving environment is truly a wonderful experience that every mother should consider.
