First, gather these tools and supplies before starting your home-improvement project. You can purchase these new or borrow them from someone for an added savings:

For drain cleaning, you’ll need a drain auger. To replace a toilet seat, a toilet seat kit will be needed. Average cost is @ $13. Supplies for installing a new showerhead include a replacement showerhead, pipe wrenches, and a roll of Teflon tape. You should also have the following tools within your reach: screwdriver, long needle-nose pliers, plunger, wet rag, adjustable wrench, measuring tape, and masking tape.

For clogged drains, unscrew the drain cover or remove the stopper by detaching the pivot rod from the sink base. Pull out visible clogs with pliers. Fill the sink with one inch of water. Next, plug the overflow holes with a wet rag and plunge for one minute. If your clog is more serious, this is where your drain auger will come in handy. You will need to feed it down the drain until you feel an opposing force. Jiggle the auger handle back and forth to clear the drain. Take out the auger and then let the hot water run.

Toilet seats can get loosened and cracked from extended use. Luckily, they can be replaced in a jiffy. First, pop off the plastic caps and use an adjustable wrench and screwdriver to loosen the bolts. Remove the seat and measure the distance between the screw holes on the seat. Make a trip to your local home improvement store for a new toilet seat. The options are endless depending on what style you prefer. Once you make a selection, bring your seat home and position it by inserting the new bolts through the holes from the top. Twist nuts onto the bottom of the bolts. Hold the nuts in place and then tighten the bolts. Voila!

If you are in need of a new showerhead, wrap a piece of masking tape around the top of the shower arm and showerhead. Hold your pipe wrenches over the tape. Turn the lower wrench to loosen the showerhead and unscrew it by hand. Wrap the threaded end of the arm with Teflon tape for a watertight seal. Screw on the new head and tighten. Depending on the model, instructions will vary so follow the manufacturer’s directives.

Within a few hours, you too can give your bathroom a new look!
