Great Value Stuffing Mix is a Good, Cheap Stuffing Alternative

If it were up to me, I would have stuffing at every dinner. To me, it’s the perfect side dish. And, for the most part, I’ve always purchased Stove Top stuffing mix.

However, as with much of my food shopping, a tight budget has forced me to try cheaper brands of stuffing mix. And, last night, we gave the Great Value brand a try.

The thing I like about Stove Top stuffing is it offers a great tasting side dish that doesn’t fill you up too much. And, whether you make it on the oven or in the microwave, it comes out pretty much the same. So, when we tried the Great Value chicken flavored stuffing, it had a lot to live up to. And, for the most part, it did a decent job.

We made the entire box of stuffing (I go through a lot) and, because our stove was already occupied with other dishes, we used the microwave to make it.

Preparation wise, I have no complaints. The instructions on the back of the box were easy to follow and very accurate in terms of how much water to add (something other cheap brands of stuffing have a problem with).

I also was impressed with the texture of the Great Value stuffing. Because we had made it in the microwave, I had expected it to come out clumpy and hard which, again, was a problem with other cheaper brands. To my surprise, this didn’t happen. The stuffing looked like we had made it on the stove. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have known otherwise if I hadn’t made it myself.

The box also made quite a bit of stuffing; enough for each of us to have seconds and still have some left over for lunch the next day.

However, I wasn’t as big of a fan of the taste of this product as I would like to have been. The Great Value brand wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t as good as the more expensive Stove Top variety either. My biggest complaint about this part of the stuffing is it seemed to be a bit salty. Not every bite; just, every once in a while, I would take a fork full and it was like I was biting into a lump of seasoning. I’m not sure if this was a result of cooking it in the microwave or the way it normally turns out.

Overall, though, I do feel the Great Value brand of stuffing mix isn’t bad considering it is much cheaper than its well-known competition. If you’re on a tight food budget, you could do much worse.
