Guide to Southport and Homecroft

Southport is a small community just south of Indianapolis. It sits on the border of Indianapolis and it’s well known small town neighbor, Greenwood. Though technically a part of Indianapolis, downtown and the north side of Indianapolis are a forty-minute drive and a world away from Southport.

The Best Sites and Activities in Southport:

A definite must see for visitors is the Acropolis Greek Restaurant & Lounge at 1625 E Southport Rd. They’re just east of Madison on Southport Road. This place is beautiful, quaint and clean. Their interior is the classic bold blue and white Greek style and the staff is excellent. Entrees include salads with real goats cheese and fresh peppercorns, gyros and wonderful spaghetti bolognaise. They serve a cozy but stiff cup of authentic Greek coffee, Greek coffee has a fine silky consistency of coffee silt at the top and is a nice old-fashioned alternative to espressos and lattÃ?©s. The bar has a large selection of international and Mediterranean liquors and wines as well as the atmosphere of a small European town.

If you’re into something more exiting there’s always Club Insomnia at 20 East Thompson Rd, just west of us-31. There’s dancing, a lot of techno-industrial and alternative rock playing and a ton of interesting cocktails and drinks. Not for the faint of heart-this club can get wild, by Indiana standards. They’re open till 2am.

The Southport Antique Mall on 2028 E Southport Rd. is large and well-known. They sell absolutely EVERYTHING antique, from 1800 cotton dresses and petty coats to full kitchen appliance and dining sets from the 60s. This is a very high end and expansive antique mall, but there are always deals and smaller items for those who wish to spend less. I enjoy just looking at some of the amazing designs of the past. On your way out you might want to stop at the locally famous Longs Bakery just across the railroad tracks to your left. Their donuts and breads are great.

Hannah House was built in the four-square Italianate style in 1858 by Alexander Hannah and has a gorgeous and unique interior, fully furnished and restored to its original time period. For a beautiful and well narrated tour of an historical aristocratic home stop by the Hanna House, rumor has it that it’s haunted but it’s also romantically charming and relaxing They host an annual Easter egg hunt and are a favorite for touring on Halloween.

Don’t go thereâÂ?¦

If you enter Southport from the north on Madison avenue you will first see a sign that says “Welcome to Homecroft”, do not go even one mile over the speed limit in this area-it’s a speed trap. Southport Road also has a long stretch of 25 mph speed limit near the antique mall-be sure to stick to it because they give tickets very quickly.

The Dairy Queen near Madison and Southport road, near the antique mall has had horrible service for over a decade and rumor has it they also have a cockroach problem. I don’t know about the cockroaches but the wait is long and the orders are often mismatched.
