Hampton Roads is home to several outdoor attractions that are guaranteed to provide hours of family fun and entertainment. Located in southeastern Virginia, the Hampton Roads community consists of seven cities, which make up one of the states Metropolitan areas. These cities include Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, and Suffolk. Those visiting the area take full advantage of activities the community has to offer. Regardless of whether you are a history buff, or into outdoor adventure, a thrill in Hampton Roads is suitable to all likings.
Although April thru October is proven the community’s tourist season, people from all parts of the country flock to Hampton Roads throughout the year. The summer months include a wide range of outdoor activities for the whole family. The Virginia Beach oceanfront, which is a hot attraction, consists of 28 miles of shore and an abundance of water sports and activities including surfing, jet skiing, and parasailing. Because the average summer temperature is well into the upper 80’s, this affords the opportunity to perfect a tan, or swim in the ocean. After sunset, tourists and locals can stroll the boardwalk or famous strip and enjoy hours of entertainment by street performers. In addition to these performers, the oceanfront also hosts several summer concert series.
Virginia Beach is also home to a water park located a few miles from the beach, and an amusement park, which is conveniently located on the oceanfront at 15th and Atlantic Avenue. The Virginia Beach Amusement Park operates from March to November.
Hampton Roads is also home to several museums. The Virginia Science Museum and the Virginia Living Museum located in Virginia Beach and Newport News is the perfect stop for those fascinated by various marine and wildlife. Norfolk is perfect for small children, and includes a petting zoo. Those captivated by the moon, meteorites, and space will enjoy spending a day at the Virginia Air and Space Museum in Hampton. Located minutes from Langley NASA research center this museum is also home to an IMAX theater. Through 3D programs, visitors are able to experience space, the ocean, land formations, and various continents.
Because Hampton Roads is home to several military bases, it only makes sense to include museums and attractions that are representative of a military community. Popular attractions include the Naval Shipyard Museum in Portsmouth and Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk. For a true military experience, considering touring the Battleship Wisconsin located at Norfolk’s Nauticus museum.
