Haunted Destination One: The Winchester Mystery House
“Winchester” does in fact refer to the creators of the Winchester rifle. The Winchester mystery house is located in San Jose where Sarah Winchester purchased an enormous eight room house after her husband has died and left her the fortune. She bought the home because she instated that spirits were tormenting her to do it.
Much like Stephen King’s “Rose Red” construction began immediately at the whim of the ghostly apparitions. The house was continuously being built for 39 years until the mansion had evolved with the weirdest configurations. Secret passage ways, miles of corridors doors which open to blank walls stairway that never seemed to end that lead to no where and chimneys that weren’t real flooded the house because Sarah felt that the ghosts we coming after her.
Although riddled with extremely painful arthritis she felt as though the spirits were commanding her to entertain them and so she would play the piano for hours. On top of this madness she would order her servants to serve the ghosts 5 course meals where they were the guests of honor. She also believed that there was magic in the number 13 and so this woman, with obvious Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, had constructed the staircase to have 13 steps, 13 windows, and 13 chandeliers, 13 lights on the chandeliers and yes, 13 bathrooms.
Sarah Winchester died in 1922, and after many psychic investigations, her spirit is said to haunt the house. Her piano playing echoes in the halls, enormous light beams flow across the floors and Sarah now dines at the same kitchen table were she once had diner parties with the phantoms that haunted her.
Haunted Destination Two: The Whaley House
In southern California, San Diego to be precise, is home of one of the most active supernatural sites in California. The Whaley house is now a haunted museum and has been acknowledged by the Unites States Commerce Department as one of the 30 most vivid ghost houses in the country.
One of the victims that is obviously still “hanging around” is Jim Robinson other wise known as Yankee Jim. He was hung for theft and the gallows were built on the same spot prior to the house construction. Many reports have been documented as seeing his body every so often hanging from a rope and dangling over the floor. But he is only one as there has been a collection of spirits haunting these walls. There have been many people talking the tours that can hear a female voice singing the song “Home Again” with a piano and violin surrounding around them.
