Holy Hesse! Travel Adventures in the Heart of Germany
By Erin M. Blakemore
You’ve heard of the Black Forest and Berlin. But you may be missing out on one of Germany’s true treasures – the state of Hesse. Conveniently located near Frankfurt International Airport (one of two major airports in the country), Hesse offers history, culture and fun in the heart of Germany. Save on expensive rail fare and check out the following popular -and lesser known – destinations:
Colorful Castles: Don’t skip Hesse in favor of the Black Forest’s more famous castles. Hesse boasts over 100 German castles with unique heritages and gorgeous grounds. Try Schloss Escheberg near Kassel, Schloss Phillipsruhe near Gelnhausen, or Schloss Fasanerie in Eichenzell, just outside of Fulda.
Magnificent Museums: Germany has so many museums, it may seem overwhelming. During your stay in Hesse, try the Brothers Grimm Museum in Kassel, the Goethe Museum in Frankfurt, or the German Ivory Museum in Erbach.
Awesome Architecture: There’s no shortage of fascinating architecture to be found in the heart of Germany, including Michelstadt, with its “on-stilts” town hall, Fulda’s baroque Dom cathedral, or Frankfurt’s Romerberg square, which sports buildings from the 14th century.
Fun Festivals: Hesse is known for its colorful festivals and celebrations. Each small town has varying annual events, so do some research to ensure you make it to the most interesting. Or try better-known festivals and attractions such as Frankfurt’s annual Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt), Bad Hersfeld’s summertime music and drama festival, or wine festivals in Wiesbaden.
With so many trips to Germany including a northern and southern focus, don’t forget to explore one of the country’s most unique and stimulating regions – its heart!
