Home Cooking in the Foothills of the Adirondacks
You may think that nobody can make a home-cooked meal like Grandma, but you are wrong. Here in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in New York State, I have enjoyed savory home-cooked meals at three different establishments since I was a small child. My favorite is Saltsman’s Hotel in Ephratah, New York . Upon entering you are greeted by the owner who details the specials along with taking your drink order, which arrives in about three minutes. On the menu every day are home-made fried chicken, veal cutlet, strip steak, and appetizers such as the bloomin’ onion among others. A full course meal consists of home-made chicken soup which I recommend, cole slaw with home-made boiled dressing, white yeast bread, two delectable corn fritters, creamed potatoes, creamed onions(served en casserole) and another home-grown vegetable in season. You cannot go wrong with the generous, tasty portions, served family-style. Home cooking is no stranger to MaryAnn’s Tavern which is located on Route 29, just outside of Broadalbin, New York. Every Friday night we partake of their famous lightly-breaded and fried whitefish filet (to die for) along with three choices form mac and cheese, soup, salad, cole slaw, broccoli, etc. , all for under$13. Home cooking and family-owned is my third favorite irestaurant, Dick and Peg’s in Caroga Lake, New York. We have had all sorts of family gatherings there amid the Adirondack memorabilia. The salad bar is fresh and tasty with accompanying yeast rolls and entrees that melt in your mouth.
You may think that home cooking is Grandma’s domain, but I can assure you that it is alive and well in the restaurants of the Adirondack region of New York.
