Home Security – How Outdoor Lighting Can Protect Your House

While most people take steps to keep their homes protected, many fail to realize the importance of lighting in their home security plan. Lighting is often overlooked and it shouldn’t be. In fact, lighting should be at the top of any home security checklist. Here’s why.

In order to keep burglars and other criminals away from your home you should have adequate lighting around your home, especially all outside doors. Most burglaries occur by entering through a door. Just by having a simple light bulb above your door can be enough to scare off any potential burglar.

It makes sense when you think about it. A burglar or vandal doesn’t go around well lit entrances. Generally, they will go on somewhere else, but if there are no lights on they feel like they’ve been given an open invitation so to speak.

One of the best home security items for any home are motion detector lights. I believe motion detector lights have been one of the best home security inventions ever.

Do you have a big yard? You need motion detectors. You can easily place these on your home and they light up the entire area. They even have these systems with an alarm to give even more protection. No burglar likes the sound of an alarm going off and when they hear one, you can bet that most will run off in the opposite direction.

You can install motion detector lights not only on the back of your home, but also on the sides and the front.

Another area where lighting is an important security function is the garage. If you don’t have an automatic garage door opener you should seriously consider installing one. It not only protects your car, but it automatically turns on the lights. You should also install a motion detector light above your garage door to add more security.

When placing motion detectors in front of your home, you’ll need to keep in mind that placement is a little trickier. You don’t want them coming on every time someone is walking their dog down the sidewalk. Take a few minutes and do some testing to find the right positions for them.

I hope you can now see the importance of lighting in your home’s security system. If you haven’t taken the time to work on your home’s lighting, I would encourage you to do it as soon as possible, it will keep the burglars away and give your home the security it needs.
